CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team fell 3-0 in a road sweep to Charleston on Friday evening.
Â
After being gifted a pair of points by UC due to a pair of errors, FSU quickly found themselves behind 4-2, but three combined kills from junior Amanda Knieper and senior AJ Thompson brought them back to a 6-6 tie. The Golden Eagles won four of the next five points to take a three-point lead, but the Bobcats responded with five of six to narrowly go ahead 12-11, as freshman Dani Kunkle led the charge with a trio of points. Charleston pulled back ahead, as Kunkle kept Frostburg just within touching distance after two straight kills, with the deficit standing at 19-17. UC put away any hope of an FSU comeback, scoring four in a row as part of a 6-1 run to take the set 25-18.
Â
Set two began with the sides trading small runs up to a 4-4 tie after back-to-back kills from Kunkle and sophomore Maya Johnson. Charleston continued to hold a narrow lead, but kept the Bobcats around after a pair of errors put things at 9-8. The Golden Eagles took full control from that point, scoring 10 of the next 12 to take a commanding 19-10 lead. Senior Brenna Siperko stopped the run with a kill, then Kunkle served up an ace, while Knieper earned a kill and Thompson combined with sophomore Grace Yochum on a block, although UC would take the set 25-16.
Â
FSU came out of the blocks quickly in the third set, trying to avoid a sweep, as Siperko and Johnson bookended a pair of Kunkle scores to take a 4-0 lead. Charleston responded with five in a row, as a freshman Devin Brunk kill brought things to 7-7 after some back-and-forth action. With the score later tied at 9-9, UC went on another run, taking six of seven to go up 15-10. Brunk and Thompson then combined for five of the next seven Bobcat points, attempting to stay alive at 21-18. The Golden Eagles shut the door late, taking three of four late on to secure the set 25-20 for the match victory.
Â
Kunkle led all scorers with 14 kills, while junior Fiona Gonzalez Medina tied the match lead with 12 digs in the effort.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 6-12 overall, while Charleston improves to 15-6. The Bobcats stay on the road for a quick turnaround, as they face West Virginia State on Saturday, October 19 at 2 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
