Women's Basketball Sets FG Percentage Record in Completing Season Sweep of Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team took down Glenville State on the road Wednesday evening by a final score of 90-77, completing the regular season sweep of last season's conference champions and snapping their eight-game winning streak.

Glenville got on the board first, while freshman Alanna Tate converted a layup to open up the scoring for Frostburg. The Bobcats couldn't miss over the next four minutes, as a three from graduate Maggie Sharp started a 13-0 run, with FSU finding themselves up 15-2. The Pioneers were finally able to put the ball in the basket, knocking down back-to-back shots to bring the score to 15-6. Frostburg continued their rhythm on offense, as layups from freshman Grace Middleton and sophomore Emilee Weakley, and another trey from Sharp, increased the lead to 22-6 with just four minutes left in the first quarter. Both teams traded missed buckets for over a minute as each team sank a free throw. GSU was able to put up a late run, outscoring FSU on the final couple possessions to end the quarter with the Bobcats leading 25-13.

GSU started things off in the second, knocking down a three to cut their deficit to nine. The Pioneers continued to score, scoring the next four points to cut the game to 25-20. Frostburg called a timeout, as freshman Jenna Muha put the Bobcats on the board right out of the huddle. Both teams traded points once more, as Glenville found themselves within four, but FSU would not let them get any closer. Middleton connected on an easy layup before junior Jasmine Johnson got in on the scoring action, putting up a layup as well for a 35-28 game. GSU was finally able to cut in front 37-36 with 3:23 left in the half, but Tate quickly cut to the basket, as Weakly found her for a 38-37 FSU lead. Frostburg used that momentum, as layups from Middleton and freshman Jenna Liska increased the Bobcat lead to five. Both teams traded points from the free throw line to finish out the quarter, as FSU led 44-40 at the break.

To start the third quarter, the Pioneers hit a quick three to jump back within one. Weakley converted back-to-back to layups to start the scoring for the Bobcats before Muha put in a layup off a pass from Sharp for a 50-43 lead. GSU trailed by eight at the seven minute mark, as another layup from Weakley increased Frostburg's lead to 10. The Bobcats stayed in front, as both teams battled on offense until multiple layups from Muha, Weakley, and Sharp fired up the Bobcats offense, as they built their lead to 75-50 over the next six minutes. FSU connected on more free throws and layups to round out the third up 78-53, outscoring Glenville 34-13 in the quarter.

The Pioneers once again opened scoring to start the quarter, connecting on a layup and a trio of three pointers to get within 14 as part of an 11-0 run. Graduate MacKenzie Freeze finally dropped in the first points of the quarter for FSU just over three minutes in. From there, Tate and Weakley each converted a two-pointer to put the Bobcats back up 84-64. Both teams traded baskets once more, as Frostburg found themselves up by 18 with just over four minutes left in regulation. GSU knocked down some free throws to put some more points on the board and wound out the clock with two more layups, as FSU came out on top 90-77.

With an all-around team effort, Frostburg had all five starters in double figures with Weakley (23), Sharp (20), Muha (15), Middleton (10), and Tate (10). Muha and Tate both finished with double-doubles, the latter's first of her career, with Muha grabbing 11 rebounds and Tate pulling down 10. Weakley and Middleton both dished out six assists each, as Sharp found herself with five. Weakley and Tate also finished with two steals each.

As a team, the Bobcats shot 63.9% from the floor, setting a new program record as the highest in a single game, while holding the Pioneers to just 34.1% shooting, including a 22.5% clip from three. Frostburg also held a 66-32 advantage on points scored in the paint.

With the win, FSU improves to 11-8, while Glenville moves to 14-5. The Bobcats come back home to host Concord on Saturday, February 3 at 2 PM for their next matchup in Bobcat Arena. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
