Four Hit Double Figures in Women's Basketball's High-Scoring Win Over NDC

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team defeated the Notre Dame College Falcons on Wednesday evening by a score of 83-68.

Both teams knocked down threes within in the first 30-seconds of the contest in graduate Maggie Sharp for FSU and Rachel Richardson for NDC. Two scoreless minutes passed until Karli Anker gave the Falcons a 6-3 lead, two which Sharp hit another three to tie the game 6-6. After a missed three attempt by Notre Dame, junior MacKenzie Freeze found freshman Jenna Muha, who created a three-point play for the Bobcats' first lead of the game at 9-6. Freshman Alanna Tate saw her first points of the game to keep the lead for Frostburg, but Richardson found the ball at her finger tips and earned herself a three-point play to tie the game 11 apiece. NDC took the lead back as Cencere McDaniel scored, but at the other end, Tate was fouled and sunk her free throws and the game became tied 13-13. After a defensive stop, Muha grabbed her own rebound for a put-back, followed by Tate providing a pair of assists to freshman Grace Middleton and Muha that capped an 8-0 FSU run. With under two to go and a two-point lead the Bobcats scored on three of their last four possessions, with layups from Sharp and Tate before the former nailed from deep to go into the second up 26-15.

Two points were added to FSU's score as freshman Mandy Roman hit a fifteen-foot jumper, then Tate, Middleton and Muha combined for Frostburg's following eleven points and a 39-29 advantage. After some first quarter foul trouble, sophomore Emilee Weakley provided a spark in the final two minutes, creating a pair of and-one plays, converting both plus a layup and free throw, eventually scoring the final nine points of the quarter for FSU while NDC only put up two, as the Bobcats went into halftime on top 48-31.

Freeze kicked things off with a right-handed layup and three-pointer to start the second half by growing the lead to 53-31. Each team traded baskets over the next couple minutes, with Weakley, Muha, and Freeze all getting shots to fall. A scoreless period ensued, which was ended when Tate got sent to the line and knocked down a free throw, sparking another run as Sharp hit another three, Weakley and Tate made layups, and Muha sunk a pair of free throws, with Frostburg ending the third quarter on top 71-48.

Off a rebound from junior Jasmine Johnson, Weakely found herself going coast-to-coast to open the scoring in the fourth. Over a minute later Noel Weathers made a move in the post and found herself with a layup to try and get some momentum for the Falcons, but junior Harley Herndon found Roman wide open for another two points and a 25-point lead. Anker hit another three to add to the NDC score, as back on the other end of the court, another foul was called sending Weakley to the line, who swooshed in both freebies. Notre Dame was able to get within sixteen after converting a string of layups, but only had three minutes on the clock. Freshman Jenna Liska was found wide open under the basket off a pass from Roman, hitting her first two points of the game, then each team had trips to the line late, leading to a final score of 83-68 FSU.

Four Bobcats finished the game with double digit points, led Weakley's game-high 21, as Sharp followed with 14, Muha with 13 and Tate's 11. Freeze and Tate racked up five assists each, both game-highs, as the team as a whole registered 21, their most in a game since February of last season. Herndon led the defense with three steals, while Weakley's game-leading eight rebounds helped FSU win the battle of the boards with 41 compared to NDC's 21.

With the conclusion of today's contest, Frostburg moves to an overall record of 8-7 and a conference record of 6-3, while Notre Dame falls to an overall record of 4-11 and a conference record of 2-7. The team next travels to Salem (WV) to take on the Tigers Saturday, January 20 at 2pm. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
