WINGATE, N.C. - The Frostburg State Field Hockey team completed their trip to the Carolinas with another victory, defeating Wingate 1-0 on Monday afternoon.
In a first quarter devoid of many chances, the Bulldogs had the first shot of the contest, which went wide of sophomore keeper Zoe Barnes' goal. FSU was able to get the ball in the cage after junior Macy Layfield fed fellow junior Lina Goetz in front of goal, with the midfielder scoring her first in a Bobcat uniform for a 1-0 lead.
Frostburg dominated the second period, holding Wingate without a shot. Sophomore Paige Leitzel looked likeliest to double the lead, but one of her attempts went wide while the other was saved by WU goalie Hannah Colavita-Jones. Senior Emilie Bonhivert looked to increase her team-leading goal total, but shot wide left of the mark with five minutes until halftime. The Bobcats continued to dominate possession and keep Wingate's offense at bay headed into the third.
Bonhivert had another effort saved to open the second half, followed by senior Ashlyn Cave having a shot blocked with FSU piling on the pressure. The Bulldogs were able to break free on a counterattack, winning a penalty corner at the other end, but Frostburg's defense locked down and defended capably, keeping WU again without a shot in the quarter.
Wingate ramped up their intensity at the start of the fourth, firing off a pair of shots in the first five minutes, though neither were on target. Layfield forced Colavita-Jones into a save just a minute later, but the Bobcats were forced into their defensive half for much of the final nine minutes. Barnes made a couple of key saves late on, as the rest of the defense did enough to keep the Bulldogs off the board to secure the 1-0 win.
With the result, Frostburg improves to 2-0 on the year, while Wingate begins their season 0-1. FSU returns to action on Friday, September 8 to face Slippery Rock on the road at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted at frostburgsports.com.
