SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell to #2 Shippensburg on the road Saturday afternoon by a final score of 5-1.
There was little to no action in the first quarter, as both teams were held scoreless. Shippensburg found themselves with the first opportunity at goal, firing back-to-back shots and receiving back-to-back penalty corners, but came up no good, due to saves from sophomore Zoe Barnes. The Raiders continued to dominate possession, taking five more shots and earning two more penalty corners to finish out the quarter.
Shippensburg came out in the second with some energy, as the quarter started with three shots and a goal from the Raiders. Frostburg was able fire back and earn some shots on goal, as on a penalty corner taken by senior Mariana Day, the ball found the stick of fellow senior Ashlyn Cave, who dished it back to Day, who made a move and sent the ball into the back of the cage for a tie game. Shippensburg quickly answered back, as they scored their second goal not even a minute later, allowing the Raiders to lead 2-1 at the half.
The third quarter was similar to the first, with Shippensburg coming out firing a shot at goal just 39 seconds in. The Bobcats earned themselves three penalty corners, with senior Emilie Bonhivert trying at goal, but was denied by the goalie. The Raiders dominated possession in the third, keeping the ball in their offensive half. Barnes was credited with another save, as Shippensburg fired three more shots. Day and Bonhivert both earned another chance at goal, but came up empty, as the score remained 2-1 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Raiders came out hot in the fourth, making a statement, scoring within the first 30 seconds. Around a minute later, Shippensburg tacked on another one, scoring their fourth goal of the game for a 4-1 lead. FSU struggled to keep up, as everything seemed to be clicking for the Raiders. Shippensburg was not done yet, finding the back of the cage once more and sealing the deal with their fifth goal of the game, as the Raiders handed FSU the 5-1 loss.
With the conclusion of the game, Frostburg falls to an overall record of 6-4 while Shippensburg improves to an overall record of 8-2. The Bobcats are back in action at home on Tuesday, October 3 at 5 PM as they take on Slippery Rock. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
