BOYDS, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team finished with a perfect weekend record at the MD Soccerplex, defeating Georgian Court 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
From the opening kick-off, FSU enjoyed the majority of possession and were rewarded just under six minutes in as the ball was scrambled around the top of the box, eventually adjudged to have been handled by a Lion defender to give away a penalty. Senior Lela Clark stepped up and slotted coolly into the right side of the net for a 1-0 Bobcat lead.
Frostburg continued their assault on the GCU goal with five shots in eight minutes, though none found the target. Senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer came closest, as her attempt just hit the wrong side of the post and was nabbed by Lion keeper Carley Polchak. Georgian Court saw their first shot at the 22-minute mark, but Ava Reardon's audacious shot from distance was well wide of senior Ashley Bilger's goal. Fiocco-Mizer and junior Mackenzie Alonso both fired away shots that were saved by Polchak, with FSU gaining a firm grip on the contest.
The Bobcats got the second goal they desired, as just two minutes after coming on, substitutes sophomore Morgan Mrizek and junior Madi Allen connected on a brilliant through ball from the former that the latter slid under Polchak for a 2-0 lead.
Juniors Keely Knotts and Mei Homman both tried their luck with shots outside the box, but neither troubled Polchak too terribly as the sides went to halftime.
The Lions came out of the half with renewed energy, taking the game to Frostburg in the first couple minutes and forcing Bilger into her first save of the match. As FSU settled in, they reverted to their first-half form of creating chance after chance, with Fiocco-Mizer again coming close, her blast from distance cannoning back off the crossbar on 50 minutes,
Gerogian Court came back up the field five minutes later, with Reardon heading over the bar following a corner, but that would be the Lions' last shot of the contest. Senior Kayla Robinson, Alonso, Allen, and Knotts all put efforts on target, but substitute keeper Emma Bennett was equal to each one, repelling as much as she could to keep her team in the game. The final 15 minutes of action saw little in terms of chances created, with Frostburg shutting up shop to seal the 2-0 win.
Bilger combined with substitute junior Katie Sterne for the first shutout of the year, as the defense held GCU to just three shots, compared to 30 on the Bobcat side.
With the win, FSU improves to 2-0 on the year, while Georgian Court falls to 0-2. Frostburg returns to Bobcat Stadium on Sunday, September 10 as they host Notre Dame (Ohio) in their MEC opener, with kick-off set for 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
