GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team used a pair of second half goals to defeat Glenville State 2-0 on the road Wednesday night and maintain their undefeated run.
Â
It would be the hosts to get the match underway, as Merel Smets fired from distance, but the effort was straight at junior Katie Sterne to make the save just over a minute in. Three minutes later, senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer had a great chance to score after being played through by junior Madi Allen, but was thwarted by onrushing Pioneer keeper Abigail Morales. Allen then had a smart header saved, as Morales scrambled back on her goal line to stop the ball from going over.
Â
FSU held the lion's share of possession but couldn't regularly make their way into scoring chances. On 18 minutes, Fiocco-Mizer skimmed a shot from the 18-yard line, with Morales making a kick save, then senior Dez Mortimer blazed a half-volley just over the bar. Frostburg only managed two shots the rest of the half, with junior Cat Smith curling a ball wide and sophomore Jayme Sooy's lofted effort straight into Morales' hands. Sterne made a late save on another long-distance shot, keeping the match at 0-0 going into halftime.
Â
Senior Lela Clark opened the second half by having an effort from deep straight into the midriff of Morales. Just over 10 minutes in, the Bobcats got the breakthrough they were looking for, as Smith charged in to win the ball in midfield, then played Fiocco-Mizer into the box, whose cross pinged around before Allen turned and fired into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Frostburg tried to double their lead with Allen placing a shot just wide and senior Hannah Thompson seeing her shot saved. GSU tried to throw numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but FSU's defense held firm, not allowing another shot the rest of the way. As the clock ticked inside the final 10 minutes, the Bobcats finally found their insurance goal, as Fiocco-Mizer hooked a bouncing ball back into the box, where sophomore Morgan Mrizek was able to control and finish past Morales for the 2-0 final.
Â
FSU outshot the Pioneers 11-2, with nine of their efforts being on target. Sterne earned her first career clean sheet, playing the full 90 minutes in the team's third-straight shutout.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 8-0 on the year, while Glenville falls to 2-4-2. The Bobcats return home on Saturday, September 30 to face No. 15 Charleston (WV) at 5:30 p.m., where it will be senior day in Bobcat Stadium. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
