MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey game got back into the win column with a 3-1 victory over Maryville on Saturday.
Â
The Saints started the quicker of the two teams, earning a penalty corner inside the first four minutes, then fired off a shot that was blocked by FSU's defense. Junior Femke Hofkamp started the Bobcat offense with a pair of shots that were both saved by keeper Liz Bierhals. MU asserted themselves once again, with sophomore Zoe Barnes forced to save before being beaten by a Dane Thiart shot for a 1-0 Maryville advantage.
Â
Frostburg swiftly got back in the game to start the second quarter, as junior Macy Layfield had a shot wide in the first 30 seconds, then just two minutes later, freshman Gracie Daniels turned home a corner from senior Emilie Bonhivert to tie things at 1-1. Barnes made another save three minutes into the quarter, then Hofkamp missed just wide and Bonhivert had an effort blocked as the Bobcats pressed for the lead. Barnes made another save in between a pair of Saint corners, then Frostburg ended the half with a corner that they were unable to convert.
Â
Each side earned penalty corners in the first six minutes of the third period, but neither could find the lead. Midway through the quarter, Layfield made a surging run down the right side, which eventually led to freshman Emma Price sweeping the ball into a wide open cage for her first collegiate goal, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage. The FSU defense then made a stop on a late MU corner to take the game into the fourth.
Â
Maryville came firing out of the gate to start the final frame, winning a pair of corners, as Frostburg defended commendably, blocking two shots and forcing another one wide to preserve the lead. The Bobcats regained command of play, getting three corners and firing away two shots within three minutes. After Bierhals made saves against both junior Olivia Wenzel and senior Ashlyn Cave, senior Ava Schmidt corralled a rebound just inside the arc and fired to the back of the cage for her first goal of the season to seal things at 3-1.
Â
FSU held the advantage in shots (15) and corners (12), while Bierhals made four saves in goal compared to Barnes' three.
Â
With the win, Frostburg improves to 5-3 on the year, while Maryville falls to 4-3. The Bobcats have a quick turnaround as they face No. 6 Mansfield on Sunday, September 24 at 11 a.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com. Â
