Women's Soccer Puts in 7-Goal Performance Against Tigers

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – The No. 18 Frostburg State Women's Soccer team put forth a complete performance in a 7-0 road victory over Salem (WV) on Wednesday night.

FSU had the upper hand from the starting whistle, as junior Keely Knotts and seniors Hannah Thompson and Toni Fiocco-Mizer all had shots on target within the first 10 minutes, but Tiger keeper Sarah Cabera was equal to each one. After a spell of action in which neither team was able to muster much offense, Fiocco-Mizer forced another save on 18 minutes, followed by senior Lela Clark, juniors Cat Smith and Mei Homman, and sophomore Morgan Mrizek all getting efforts off that were seen away by Cabera.

Finally, with 11 minutes until the half, Thompson fed sophomore Carly Gillette to get the Bobcats on the board for a 1-0 lead. That seemed to spark the Frostburg scoring effort, as just four minutes later, Thompson again turned provider for junior Madi Allen to slot home. FSU put four more shots on target before the end of the half, but the lead stood at just 2-0 going to the break.

Freshman Grace Sarver wasted no time getting her first collegiate goal, scoring just 35 seconds into the second half for a quick 3-0 advantage. Frostburg continued to pepper Cabera's goal over the next 12 minutes with four shots needing saved. Fiocco-Mizer got herself on the score sheet at the 57-minute mark to earn her third goal in two games.

As the game went on, more and more FSU players got the chance to impress, as sophomore Hannah Clagett earned her second collegiate goal off a double assist from junior Mackenzie Alonso and freshman Chelsea Pettyjohn. The latter then went on to score her first Bobcat goal six minutes later, with Mrizek assisting for a 6-0 lead. Senior Dez Mortimer capped off the night by converting a penalty with five and a half minutes remaining, her first goal of the season and Frostburg's seventh of the game.

The Bobcats held SU without a shot in the entire match, giving senior Ashley Bilger, junior Katie Sterne, and freshman Mia Graff the combined shutout, with all three seeing time in goal. FSU had 43 shots in total, 29 of them on goal, while also earning 17 corner kicks.

With the win, Frostburg remains undefeated at 4-0, while Salem falls to 0-2. The Bobcats stay on the road to face Wheeling on Sunday, September 17 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be provided at frostburgsports.com.
