SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team dropped their conference road game 3-0 to the Notre Dame College Falcons on Wednesday evening.
The first fourteen minutes of the game were evenly matched up, as both teams earned throw ins, corner kicks, and free kicks. After back and forth play, NDC secured possession of the ball in the midfield, as a cross into the box led to a header from the Falcons striker, sending the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 game.
NDC had the momentum and took full advantage of it, scoring their second goal of the game just eight minutes later. With the Falcons keeping the pressure on goal, graduate Joel Assal made some diving saves, keeping the score 2-0. Frostburg had a few opportunities to score, as junior Randy Ferrin took the Bobcats first shot of the game, but missed wide. Assal made a high save yet again with the half winding down, allowing the game to remain 2-0 at the break, in favor of NDC.
Both teams started the second half with different starters from the first, looking to shake things up. This seemed to benefit both teams, as there was not much action the first 25 minutes of the half. During that time, both teams took turns earning a few yellow cards, throw ins, and free kicks. Junior Alex Retzos found himself with an opportunity at goal, missing wide right. The Falcons were able to regain possession, adding another goal to their score to go up 3-0 with just over 20 minutes left in regulation.
Assal continued to work in goal, making a trio of saves to keep the score the same. Frostburg was able to maintain possession, firing three shots at goal, but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. Both teams got a little chippy as time was winding dow, as multiple fouls were called on both teams. Graduate Alex Flores and junior Laki Psallidas each took a shot at goal, trying to get the Bobcats on the board, but were unable to do so as the game ended in favor of NDC 3-0.
With the conclusion of this game, FSU falls to an overall record of 3-2 while NDC moves to an overall record of 4-0-1. Frostburg returns home on Sunday, September 17 as they take on Davis & Elkins for a conference match-up starting at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
