Field Hockey Falls Just Short in Double Overtime Loss to Pace

Pleasantville, N.Y. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team lost a tightly contested matchup with Pace, falling in double overtime by a score of 5-4.

Frostburg, coming off their best start in recent history with wins in the first three games, had a tough test ahead with #10 ranked Pace Setters. The Setters took the first shot of the game, just over a minute into the game, forcing sophomore Zoe Barnes to come up with a save early on. The Bobcats responded quickly, gaining position and momentum. FSU was denied on three different attempts by the Setter goalie, before junior Femke Hofkamp scored on a feed from sophomore Paige Leitzel for a 1-0 lead. Pace turned the tides after the goal, pushing for an equalizer. The Setters had six shot attempts in the remainder of the first quarter.

The second quarter continued how the first ended, with Pace applying pressure. Two minutes into the second, the Setters would find the back of the goal, tying things up at 1-1. Each team would exchange quality looks at goal, before FSU would capitalize before the end of the second. The Setters would fend off two shots from senior Ava Schmidt before fellow senior Ashlyn Cave would score off an assist from senior Emily Hughes, putting FSU up 2-1 going into the half.

The Bobcats came out of the half with a shot on goal from junior Macy Layfield, trying to add to the lead. In the 39th minute of the game, Frostburg would take a two-goal lead, on a goal from freshman Gracie Daniels. The Pacers would be awarded a corner at the end of the third, picking up a goal making the score 3-2, still in favor of FSU, heading into the fourth quarter.

Frostburg's lead went back to two at the start of the fourth with another goal, this time from Layfield. The Setters would capitalize on their chances in the fourth, scoring on the two shots they took in the quarter, and forcing the game to extra time with the score tied at 4-4.

Forcing double overtime, both teams had plenty of chances to walk away with the hard-fought win. After fending off two shots and a corner from FSU, Pace took the ball to the opposite side of the field and scored the golden goal to secure the 5-4 win.

With the loss, the Bobcats move to 3-1 on the season while Pace goes to 2-2. Frostburg will host Mercyhurst in their home opener on Tuesday, September 12 at 4 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
