Pioneers Defeat Softball in MEC Tournament Elimination Game

TROUTVILLE, Va. – The Frostburg State Softball Team concluded their season with a 5-2 loss to Glenville State on Friday evening in the MEC Tournament.

Both offenses were slow to start, only recording one hit in the first five innings, with that coming from the Pioneers. Junior Sydney Theobald got the start on the mound for Frostburg, striking out three in five and giving up only one hit, which came in the first inning.

Glenville came alive in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on five hits to jump out to a 5-0 lead. FSU recorded their first hits of the day in the bottom of sixth, as junior Ellie Buckheit singled to right center, followed by a single from freshman Arden Miller, but the Bobcats were unable to get anything going, stranding the runners on base.

The Pioneers got one more hit in the top of the seventh, but left two on base to keep the game at 5-0 heading into FSU's last at-bats. Senior Brianna Powell ripped a leadoff double to start the bottom of the inning, as sophomore Alyssa Albright would reach on an error, allowing Powell to score Frostburg's first run of the game. Freshman Gracie Nelson came in to pinch run for Albright, coming around to score as sophomore Christina Sommerkamp reached on an error as well. FSU would have two runners on base with two outs but came up just short, falling with a final of 5-2.

With the loss, Frostburg finishes at 31-22 on the season, while Glenville goes to 23-27 and will move on to day two of the tournament.

The 31 wins are the second-most in program history, while the team also set single season records for hits (458) and doubles (80).
