CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Frostburg State softball team traveled to Charleston (WV) for a Sunday doubleheader, falling in both games by scores of 7-2 and 1-0.
In game one, UC took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Eagles went on to extend their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, keeping the FSU bats quiet.
In the top of the third, the Bobcats finally got on the board, with junior Sierra Sanderson opening the inning with a single through the left side. Senior Bri Powell followed right behind with a single of her own to center field, then sophomore Allyssa Albright hit a ball out to left field, bringing Sanderson across the plate on the sac fly.
In the top of the fifth inning, Sanderson and Powell once again opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Albright would reach base on a fielder's choice to load the bases for the Bobcats. Junior Brianna Munday reached on an error by the Charleston right fielder, allowing another Bobcat run to cross the plate, but the threat ended there with the deficit still at 4-2.
The Golden Eagles would extend their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth, then the pitching staff shut FSU down to secure the first game victory.
In game two, pitching and defense was the story for both teams, as the offenses struggled to find their rhythm. The lone run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fifth inning by the Golden Eagles on an RBI double. The Bobcats only managed three hits throughout the game, giving UC the series sweep 1-0.
With the losses, Frostburg drops to 31-20 on the year, while the Golden Eagles improve to 34-8 on the season. The Bobcats are now the No. 3 seed in the North Division for next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament, where they will face second seed West Virginia Wesleyan in the first game.
