Baseball Completes Series Sweep of NDC

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Frostburg State Baseball team swept Notre Dame College in their doubleheader match-up, with winning scores of 6-2 and 5-3 on the road Sunday afternoon.

NDC was first to the punch in game one, as Tyler Shadle doubled to right center, advanced to third on a fly out, and was able to cross home plate as Nate Miller doubled to left field for an early 1-0 Falcons lead. NDC was able to add another run to their lead, as Damion Legaspe was walked, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on an RBI single for a 2-0 game.

Frostburg's offensive action started in the fourth, as junior Ethan Kiple singled and advanced to second, after sophomore Mikey Guy was hit by a pitch. With a runner in scoring position, senior Trevor Jones hit a single to load the bases. Sophomore Cy Probst went on to hit a sacrifice fly to send Kiple across home plate for the Bobcats first run of the game.

FSU was able to tie the game in the top of the sixth, as Kiple hit a solo homerun shot for a 2-2 ballgame. Frostburg took and secured the lead in the seventh, as senior Stafford Allison got in on the home run action, knocking a two-run bomb over the left field for a 4-2 FSU lead. The Bobcats continued their offense in the seventh, tacking on more runs to secure their lead, as sophomore Randy Steen hit a single, and would come around to score as three Bobcats were walked.  Frostburg tacked on yet another run, and proceeded to keep NDC scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh, taking the 6-2 win in game one.

Frostburg was first to cross home plate in game two, with a two-out rally starting from Kiple drawing a walk.  Guy ripped a single up the middle sending Kiple to third, as an RBI single from sophomore Christian Shertzer  allowed FSU to take a 1-0 lead.  The Falcons got things going quickly on offense as well, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second.

Probst was able to tie the game in the third, hitting an RBI single to left field. To take back the lead, Shertzer smacked an RBI single to left, followed by an RBI single to right from senior Andrew Smith, allowing Frostburg to take the 4-2 lead.

NDC was able to shorten the deficit in their next at-bats, as Hayden Parker singled, stole second, and scored off an RBI double by Bill Reaume. The fourth and fifth innings slowed down a bit for both teams, with Frostburg only recording one hit and the Falcons finding their way for two.

The Bobcats were able to add another run in the sixth, as Smith hit a double, and advanced to third, before junior Nick Trey was sent in to pinch run.  Trey would then cross home plate for a 5-3 game, on a sacrifice fly from Allison.   With sophomore Nate Vermillion and senior Jack Maruskin coming into pitch in the sixth and seventh innings, and only giving up two hits, FSU was able to take game two with a final of 5-3.

Steen led the way at the plate for FSU, being credited with five hits on the day.  Kiple finished with three hits, three runs, and one RBI, as five Bobcats each recorded a pair of hits.  Sophomore Cael Huyer earned the win in game one, as senior Ben Vok was credited with the win in game two, with Maruskin getting the save.

With the pair of wins, Frostburg moves to a 28-18 on the season, while NDC falls to 10-32. The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, May 5 as they travel to take on Fairmont State in a doubleheader conference matchup, with the first game set for 1 PM.
