Baseball Loses at Home to #5 Marauders

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Baseball team dropped their nine-inning home game against No. 5 Millersville by a score of 21-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

The highly-ranked Marauders came out hot early on, scoring right off the bat with one run in the top of the first. Junior Will Grove was able to quiet MU in the second inning, facing three batters for three quick outs. FSU got their first hit of the game in the top of second, as senior AJ Campbell ripped a single to left field, but was left stranded on base.

In the top of the fourth, the Marauders scored three more runs to bring the score to 4-0, as the Bobcats struggled to get anything going on offense. Millersville continued that momentum in the top of the fifth, coming around to score another trio of runs. FSU showed some fight in their half of the inning, as freshman Bryce Curry reached on an error and was brought around to score on an RBI double from sophomore Jerry Crispino, which brought the game to 7-1 heading into the sixth.

The Marauders got that run back to start the sixth, but Frostburg showed some more life, scoring two more runs to get within five. Junior Ethan Kiple hit a leadoff single and would come around to score in the very next at-bat, as senior Trevor Jones sent a two-run bomb over the fence for a 8-3 score. Millersville kept their foot on the gas, recording four more runs in the top of the seventh to continue building to their lead at 12-3.

FSU stayed quiet in their at-bats of the seventh, as the Marauders continued their scoring streak in the eighth, tacking on three more runs to make it 15-3. Frostburg tallied on one more run in the bottom of the eighth, as junior Lucas Gulczynski drew a walk, advanced to third on an error, and tagged on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Randy Steen. In their last-bats in the top of the ninth, the Marauders weren't done yet, finding ways to keep their scoring streak going, to bring the final to 21-4.

Five Bobcats recorded a hit in the game, with Campbell leading the way at two, while Jones added his pair of RBI on the homer.

With the loss, FSU goes to 18-14 on the season, while Millersville improves to 27-6. The Bobcats will remain at home to host MEC opponent Wheeling for the upcoming weekend, with the first game on Saturday, April 15 to begin at 1 PM.
