Softball Drops Home Series to West Virginia Wesleyan

FROSTBURG, MD. – The Frostburg State Softball team hosted West Virginia Wesleyan for a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader, falling in both games by scores of 4-3 in game one and 3-0 in game two.

Junior Sydney Theobald open game one pitching, forcing Wesleyan to go three up three down in the top of the first. Sophomore Laura Gilford earned an opening walk for FSU, then senior Brianna Powell knocked a single into left field, advancing Gilford to third. Sophomore Jamie Roberts grounded out to second base, putting Gilford across the plate for the first run of the game. Junior Brianna Munday singled to center field, advancing on an error to second and bringing Powell across the plate, ending the inning with a 2-0 lead.

Wesleyan would even things up in the top of the second, adding two runs of their own, as the game would remain tied at 2-2 until the top of the third. Junior Sierra Sanderson knocked a single into left field and went onto steal second. Powell advanced Sanderson to third on a ground out to second base, then Roberts added another single to score Sanderson and add a third run for Frostburg.

The defense for both teams would take control until the seventh inning when WVWC would add two more runs in the top of the seventh after loading the bases to take the lead. FSU got a double from Roberts with one out, but couldn't capitalize and fell 4-3.

In game two, Wesleyan took an early 3-0 lead over Frostburg in top of the first inning, using three hits and three errors to their favor. As in game one, defense and pitching would be the story for both teams, with each offense struggling to get anything going. FSU would look for a last-minute comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Powell opened with a single into left field, their first hit of the game, and would go on to steal second. Frostburg would make contact but the WVWC defense would keep them off the board for the complete-game shutout.

With the losses, Frostburg falls to 13-6 while Wesleyan improves to 16-7 on the season. FSU returns to action tomorrow, March 22 as they host Salem (WV) for a doubleheader set to start at 2PM. For more information visit http://frostburgsports.com
