Men's Basketball Win Streak Snapped by Notre Dame College

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Frostburg State men's basketball team would fall on the road to Notre Dame (Ohio) by a score of 87-70, breaking the team's two-game win streak.

The Bobcats looked to get the ball to the paint early by working insdide to big man junior Jason Murphy, who was fouled and went one of two at the line to give FSU first point of the game. Senior Jamil Jones cleaned up a missed shot the next trip down the floor, making the score 3-2 FSU. After exchanging baskets, senior Agyei Edwards would grab a rebound and take it down the floor to hit a three for an 8-6 Frostburg lead. The Falcons would stretch things out to a six-point lead before Edwards found graduate Vincent Smalls for a dunk. Riding the momentum, Edwards would hit two shots in a row to recapture the lead at 20-19, but NDC would finish the first half strong, outscoring the Bobcats in the final seven minutes 12-4 and taking a lead into halftime at 31-24.

The Falcons would come continue their hot play into the second half, scoring the first seven points and stretching out the lead to 38-24. Murphy broke the run by hitting a pair of shots from the charity stripe, then FSU would go on a mini run of their own, getting the game to single digits at 38-30. The Bobcat offense would run through Murphy, picking up back-to-back buckets, then Edwards got in the mix with a layup making the score 43-36 Falcons. Nearing the halfway point of the half, down 53-44, Frostburg looked for a run to close the gap, starting with Smalls fighting through contact to score inside, then got within six on a three point make from junior Sean Brown Jr to bring things to 61-55. The next shot Brown would take would be a much needed triple, as FSU found themselves down 10. With three minutes remaining, the scoreboard would read 72-60 Notre Dame, with Frostburg trying to apply defensive pressure that was whisked away with a pair of Falcon threes. With just over two minutes to go, Brown would hit another three, but the second half NDC offense was too much to handle, giving the hosts the 87-70 victory.

The Bobcats would have three score in double figures in Murphy(22), Edwards(20) and Brown(16), as Edwards would also lead the team in rebounds at nine and Smalls dished out a game-high five assists.

With the loss, Frostburg moves to 8-16 on the season, while Notre Dame moves up to 15-9. FSU will be back in action Wednesday night, February 15, as they host MEC-leading West Liberty at 7:30 p.m. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
