Men's Basketball Drops Home Game to Bowie State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team dropped their home game to Bowie State Saturday afternoon by a score of 80-70.

Bowie State started the game with a quick foul, awarding Frostburg the ball and the first basket of the game, scored by freshman Logan Lewis 2-0. BSU recovered as Anthony Carpenter hit an open three 3-2. A long scoreless minute passed until freshman Zane McCarty pulled up 12-feet from the basket and knocked down a jumper 4-3, then secured a defensive rebound, pushed the ball up the court, and found junior Sebastian Gahse for a dunk. Junior JayShaun Freeman hit a three to continue the run, as solid defense was played by FSU resulting in a rebound for Gahse, who quickly moved the ball up to senior Cole Harshman, feeding Lewis for an easy two points. Bowie State was forced to call a timeout with FSU up by eight 11-3.

A few subs, a media timeout and turnovers meant that neither team scored within the next minute. The Bulldogs were fouled, sending Kyree Freeman-Davis to the line who went two-for-two. With under ten minutes left in the half, Frostburg was able to push the ball and get up by six as redshirt sophomore Justin Roseme knocked down a shot from deep for a 23-17 advantage. BSU was able to cut FSU's lead down to two as they created three consecutive layups to pull within 23-21. Junior Kobe Baptiste had a fastbreak layup which was assisted by a steal from senior Jaylon Johnson. With 2:45 left in the half, the Bulldogs tied the game at 30 apiece on a Freeman-Davis triple. Baptiste added four to the Bobcat's score with less than two to play, converting an and-one and getting to the line. BSU was able to get one up on the Bobcats with a late three and the final bucket of the half, rolling into the break winning 35-34.

Tyler Buckhanon kicked things off with a jumper in the paint for Bowie, but Harshman was able to tie the game at 37-37 as he hit a three off a kick out from McCarty. A foul on Gahse sent the Bulldogs to the line going, two-for-two to maintain their perfect mark at the stripe. Lewis took back the lead for FSU with a deep three, then Baptiste kept the ball rolling after a post move in the paint for a successful layup and a 42-39 lead. BSU was successful from the free-throw line yet again, which resulted with another tie game 43-43. Shortly after, the Bulldogs put up seven points with ease, now winning by five 50-45.

After another media timeout, Bowie was sent to the line once again, quickly approaching the bonus. After a missed three by Frostburg, BSU pushed the ball for a layup and an eight-point lead. Three minutes ran off the clock with both teams unable to put the ball in the basket before a foul was called, sending junior Robby Williams to the line, where he converted both for a 53-47 game. Frostburg started to trail as BSU started making more shots. With eight minutes to go, the Bulldogs went up by ten for their largest advantage of the day so far. Baptiste, Gahse, Lewis and Freeman all added to the score in the final minutes but were unable to keep up with BSU, who continuously were able to get to the line in the second half, winning 80-70.

Three Bobcats reached double digits in Lewis (20), Baptiste (12), and Freeman (10). Lewis and Gahse were able to pull down six rebounds each, with Roseme following with five. McCarthy led the team with three assists.

With the conclusion of this game Frostburg falls to an overall record of 1-11, while Bowie State moves to 6-7. Frostburg is back in action on Wednesday, January 10 as they take on West Liberty in a road conference match up at 7:30pm. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
