Griffins' Hot Start Leads to Win Over Women's Basketball

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Basketball team lost on the road to Seton Hill Tuesday night by a final score of 87-61.

SHU was hot from the field to start, with four of their first six shots being three-pointers that pushed them up to a 16-4 lead in the first five minutes. Graduate Ciara Thomas found sophomore Emilee Weakley open for a three, then made a layup herself to help get the Bobcat offense going. The Griffins responded with yet another couple makes from range, then two straight steals and buckets to go up 26-11. Weakley got to the line in the final two minutes, knocking both free throws down, followed by freshman Grace Middleton scoring her first points on a jumper and another make at the charity stripe from freshman Alanna Tate to end the first with Seton Hill ahead 26-16.

The Griffins had the first four points of the second period, all at the free throw line, while maintaining their double-digit lead throughout the opening minutes. Graduate Maggie Sharp converted from downtown and hit a jumper either side of a lay-in by freshman Jenna Muha, with the score at 34-23 midway through the quarter. Senior MacKenzie Freeze and Tate scored back-to-back buckets to bring the Bobcats within 10 in the final minute and a half, but SHU converted a pair of late layups to go into the half ahead 43-29.

Within the first three minutes of the third quarter, Seton Hill hit a trio of treys that ballooned their advantage up to 52-32, as Frostburg had just one field goal in the first five minutes. Tate made a runner in the lane while Muha and Weakley both went perfect at the line, then Thomas was fed by Tate for a lay-in and converted two free throws to get within 58-42. Freshman Mandy Roman scored her first points from foul shots, then a Tate steal led to Middleton scoring in transition to get the deficit down to 13, but the Griffins hit a key three that put them back in control. Weakley scored FSU's last four points of the quarter, being matched by two Seton Hill layups, with the hosts in the lead 68-50 going to the final frame.

Each side started the fourth quarter polar opposites from the floor, with SHU scoring on their first six possessions, while Frostburg had to wait four and a half minutes for a shot to fall from the field, finding themselves down 84-54. Weakley went coast-to-coast with a steal and score, followed by Freeze being found by Thomas for a make. Freeze then had a steal of her own and found freshman Jenna Liska for a score on the fastbreak that would be the final make of the game, with SHU victorious 87-61.

Weakley led all scorers with 23 points, while also securing team-highs in rebounds (9) and steals (4). Junior Harley Herndon notched a career-high with eight rebounds, while also matching her personal best of four assists, which was the most for any Bobcat on the day.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 6-4, while Seton Hill improves to 5-3. FSU returns to Bobcat Arena to face UDC on Friday, December 15 at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
