MEC Tournament Quarterfinal Preview: #4 Glenville at #1 Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team is set to host Glenville State on Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

How They Got Here: The Bobcats come into the game as the North Division one seed, having clinched their fourth straight division title. FSU is riding a nine-game unbeaten streak and sports a record of 15-1-2, including an 11-1-2 MEC record, which is the second-best mark in the conference.

Glenville finished the regular season with a record of 5-10-3, including a 3-10-2 record in conference. The Pioneers secured their first-ever spot in the MEC tournament with three games to spare, taking the South's four seed.

The Matchup: Frostburg holds the all-time advantage over GSU, winning all four matchups between the sides. The Bobcats have won each game by at least two goals and have not conceded a goal to the Pioneers.

The Players: FSU is led offensively by senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer, a First Team All-MEC selection with seven goals and five assists. She is supported in attack by junior Madi Allen (eight goals, one assist) and sophomore Morgan Mrizek (one goal, seven assists). The midfield provides added goals from sophomore Carly Gillette (six goals, two assists), senior Lela Clark (three goals, two assists), and junior Keely Knotts (three goals), with senior Second Team All-MEC member Hannah Thompson (one goal, three assists) providing a shield in front of the back four. Defensively, FSU has four All-MEC honorees in junior center backs Cat Smith (six goals, two assists) and Mei Homman (two assists), wide back Carolyn DeSena (two assists), and senior goalkeeper Ashley Bilger.

Glenville's attack is headlined by Second Team All-MEC member Merel Smets, who is tied for fourth in the conference with 11 goals. She is helped by Honorable Mention All-MEC and All-Freshman selection Aitana Viejo (five goals, five assists) and Irene Robles (two goals, four assists).

The Rest of the Field: Across the other matches of the MEC tournament, South Division champions Charleston (WV) host the North's four seed Fairmont State, while North two seed Notre Dame (Ohio) faces South three seed West Virginia State and South two seed Concord hosts North three seed West Liberty.
