Clark's Goal Gives Women's Soccer Win Over Cardinals, Bilger Sets Shutout Record

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team continued their shutout win streak, defeating Wheeling 1-0 in Bobcat Stadium on Wednesday.

Just 90 seconds into the match, senior Toni Fiocco-Mizer had a great chance to open the scoring, finding herself free in the box, but Cardinal keeper Olivia Kqira made a fine one-on-one save to keep the match scoreless. Eight minutes later, FSU won a corner kick, from which junior Madi Allen found herself alone in the box for a free header, which was cleared off the line, but the ricochet eventually found its way to senior Lela Clark, sweeping the ball home with her left foot for the opening goal.

The Bobcats kept up the pressure, as within the next seven minutes, Allen and Clark saw a combined three shots saved, with Clark trying to volley home her own rebound but firing over the top of the goal. At the 19:17 mark, WU had their best chance of the game, as Nyah Smith got through the Bobcat back line and was one-on-one with senior Ashley Bilger, who made a fantastic diving save to prevent the ball from sneaking in the near post.

That would be the only real chance for the Cardinals in the half, as Frostburg put their attack in full motion yet again. Fiocco-Mizer and junior Cat Smith both had shots go off target, then the former tried to test Kqira, who was up to the task to prevent another goal. Smith and freshman Madison Hinton each missed the mark in the last 15 minutes, as the teams went into the half at 1-0.

Within the first three minutes of the second half, Allen forced Kqira into a flying save, attempting to curl the ball into the top of the net from just inside the 18. Clark also tested Kqira 10 minutes later, lofting a ball towards the back post that was clawed away. Fiocco-Mizer then raced in behind, beating her defender to get a shot in on goal, but Kqira made a kick save to keep her team in the game.

Sophomore Carly Gillette had a shot from distance that didn't quite have enough pace to test Kqira, then Smith found herself alone in the box, but shot right at Kqira, with FSU unable to fully put the game away. As time ticked down, the Bobcats kept the ball in the corner flags, watching the seconds waste away en route to the shutout win.

Frostburg out-shot Wheeling 27-1, with 11 shots on goal, forcing Kqira into 10 saves on the day. With the shutout, Bilger set the single-season program record for clean sheets in a season, her eighth of the campaign.

FSU improves to 14-1-1 with the win, while WU falls to 5-9-2. The Bobcats return to action on the road Sunday, October 29 to face West Liberty at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted on frostburgsports.com.
