ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team took down the Davis & Elkins Senators on the road in three sets on Saturday night.
The Bobcats picked up their third straight win, wrapping up a two day away trip playing some of their best volleyball of the season. FSU started off strong in the first set, getting senior Beverly Braun going early for the first kill of the game and an early 2-0 lead. The Bobcats held a multi-point cushion through the first half of set one until the Senators tied things up at 12-12. Frostburg quickly rebuilt their advantage on a kill from freshman Maddie Lewis that was followed up with a service ace from senior Jenna Gossard making it 19-16 FSU. Frostburg finished the set off taking the final three points winning set one 25-21. FSU out-hit the Senators in the first set .207 to .033, using the advantage to go up early in the match.
In the second set D&E had an early lead before two straight points from Lewis made things 4-3 Bobcats. The Senators would then go on a big run, pushing the lead out to 13-5. FSU would string together six straight points, three coming from sophomore Amanda Knieper, pulling pack within 15-12. The Bobcats wouldn't be able to tie things up until 20-20 after a block from Lewis and senior McKaily Thomson-Moran. Frostburg took the last four points to complete the comeback and take an important two-set lead. The Bobcats improved their hitting percentage from the first set by more than .020 points.
The third set saw an early FSU lead going up 4-1 before the Senators caught fire, taking six straight points. Taking advantage of D&E attack errors and a block from junior AJ Thompson and Lewis, FSU gained a mid-set lead at 9-8. Freshman Alyssa Stanton went on a service run, helping FSU to six straight points. A service ace form senior setter Hayley Delor got the match point and a Lewis and Thomson-Moran block finished things off 25-13 for the sweep.
Braun led the offense with 11 kills, as Thompson and Knieper hit .571 and .417, respectively, combining for 15 kills between then. Delor had 26 assists with junior Fiona Gonzalez Medina collecting 14 digs defensively.
