FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team lost at home against Notre Dame (Ohio) on Wednesday evening with a final score of 69-59.
Â
The Falcons applied pressure from the tip, breaking out to an 11-2 lead after multiple Bobcat turnovers. Out of an FSU timeout, freshman Emillee Weakley made a basket in the paint to get Frostburg back on track. Senior Maggie Sharp knocked down a three to make the score 16-11, but NDC outscored the Bobcats 7-2 to take a 23-13 lead into the second quarter.
Â
Beginning the second, Briggs-Hall scored first for FSU with a tough finish in the paint. Freshman Carine Pinkney finished off a fastbreak with floater in the paint to get the score to 26-17. Weakley then had five straight points and pulled Frostburg within five at 27-22. The Falcons would shift momentum back to their side, stretching the lead back to 13 until senior Ciara Thomas made a pair of free throws. The half would end on Sharp splitting a pair from the charity stipe with a halftime score of 39-27 Notre Dame.
Â
Out of the break, Weakley converted two layups off assists from both Sharp and Thomas. The standout freshman continued her hot start to the second half, adding two more baskets and getting FSU within nine points at 47-38. With just over three minutes left in the third, Sharp would knock down another three, then Thomas pulled in a rebound and took the ball the length of the court for a Frostburg bucket. Sophomore Harley Herndon made the front end of two foul shots to send the sides into the final quarter at 59-47.
Â
NDC would push the lead to 14 points before the Bobcats started to pull back in the game. A made shot in the paint from Sharp and nine points from Weakley would shrink the Falcon lead to seven at 65-58. Frostburg would apply pressure late in an attempt to steal some points, but the Falcons held off the late surge by making their free throws and holding the Bobcats without a basket for the final two and a half minutes to end the game with a 69-59 win.
Â
Weakley led all scorers with 28 points to go along with 11 boards, while Briggs-Hall pulled in a game-high 13 rebounds. Thomas filled the stat sheet with six rebounds and team-highs in assists (4) and steals (2).Â
