FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg Women's Basketball team hosted the Charleston (WV) Golden Eagles for a Wednesday evening match-up at Bobcat Arena, falling by a final score of 70-62 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
It would be senior Arianna Briggs-Hall and freshman Emilee Weakley to get the scoring going early in the first quarter for the Bobcats, both knocking down jumpers to open the game. Midway through the quarter, Weakley showed off her ability to knock down shots beyond the arc with back-to-back three pointers. With time winding down in the quarter, Briggs-Hall nabbed a rebound and took it down the other end of the floor for an easy lay-in, as the board was the 500th of her FSU career, becoming the 14th player in school history to record at least half a thousand. The teams sat tied at 13-13 midway through the period before senior Maggie Sharp would be fouled behind the arc, converting on all three free throws for a five-point Frostburg advantage. UC regained their composure and fought back to get within two, heading to the second quarter with a score of 21-19.
Sharp opened the next period with another shot from beyond the arc, this time draining from deep, as the make was the 100th of her FSU career, the sixth player in program history to reach the mark. She was followed by a jump shot from junior MacKenzie Freeze to make the score 26-23. Weakley went on to knock down back-to-back shots for the Bobcats to bring the score to 31-25 Frostburg. Senior Rhiana Hall would add a three of her own to keep the FSU lead at seven with two minutes to go in the first half, but turnovers and missed shots allowed Charleston to come back within one for a halftime score of 37-36 Frostburg.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going early in the second half until Sharp would once again show her range, knocking down two more threes on the evening, while Weakley dropped in two more jump shots of her own. Graduate Shelby Funchess converted on an and-one opportunity with just over a minute remaining for a six-point lead. Again, the Golden Eagles wouldn't be rattled, as they made a pair from the charity stripe to end the third with an FSU lead of 52-48.
Freeze and Weakley regained momentum at the start of the final frame, with the former knocking down an early jumper and the latter nailing another shot from distance to get the lead back to seven. UC's defense then locked down, holding Frostburg to just two buckets over the final seven and a half minutes, as they seemed to not miss from the field. In the end, they outscored FSU 22-10 in the quarter to come away with the 70-62 win.
Weakley led the charge for the Bobcats with a game-high 31 points, followed by Sharp with 12. Weakley also led the Bobcats in rebounds by collecting eight, followed by Funchess and Briggs-Hall with seven each.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 5-14 on the season, while the Golden Eagles move to 15-4 overall. Make sure to catch the Bobcats back in action on Saturday, January 28 as they travel to West Virginia State for a 2 PM tip off. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
