FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State field hockey team took the field on Saturday afternoon to face Mercyhurst in a 2-1 win.
In the first period, the Bobcats would come out strong with a quick goal two minutes into the game from sophomore Macy Layfield, her first of the season. Mercyhurst responded with some offensive pressure, but Frostburg was able to hold firm and maintain their lead. FSU would be able to double the lead with a goal from junior Emilie Bonhivert, converting her own rebound right after her first effort was saved, to go up 2-0. Bonhivert had a great opportunity to get a second goal on the board, as she was brought down in the arc for a penalty stroke, but her shot was saved by Lakers goalkeeper Kayla Desomeau.Â
Neither team was able to find much offensive momentum in the second quarter, as each defense locked in for a scoreless period to go into the half with Frostburg still up 2-0.
Mercyhurst put some more pressure on the Bobcats in the third, but once again the defense did not crack. FSU had some offensive opportunities on the counter-attack, but were unable to find the back of the cage.Â
The Lakers kept their momentum going into the fourth, as just three and a half minutes into the quarter they were able to break Frostburg's defensive line to get within 2-1. The Bobcats were resolute from that moment, as the defense didn't allow any more clear-cut chances to the Mercyhurst offense. FSU attempted to get their cushion back on several occasions, with Bonhivert firing a couple shots just wide of the goal, but a third would not be necessary as the clock ticked down to a Frostburg victory.Â
Senior Madison Manalansan and freshman Zoe Barnes split each half of the game in goal, and combined with seniors Madison Hackett and Emily Hughes, junior Maddie Wallis, and sophomore Ava Waddell to allow just the one goal on five shots.Â
With the win, FSU rises to 4-2 while Mercyhurst falls to 1-4 on the season. The Bobcats will be back in action on the road where they face Bloomsburg on Saturday, September 24 at 11 AM. For more information and updates, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
