Strong Second Half Pushes Bobcats to Win Over Yellow Jackets

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State football team defeated West Virginia State by a score of 18-7. The Bobcats outscored the Yellow Jackets in the second half 18-0.

Frostburg won the toss and deferred the ball until the second half. The Bobcat defense shut down the opening drive of WVSU and forced a punt after six plays. The opening FSU drive flipped the field after a roughing the kicker penalty extended the drive. The Yellow Jackets then put together a 14-play drive to open the scoring for the game. West Virginia State scored on a 19-yard completion making the score 7-0. The second quarter was played even with each team punting the ball three times and going into the half with the Bobcats down seven.

FSU came out from half with a different tone than the team had the first two quarters. "We decided at half we needed to come out and be physical and run the football. There was plenty of time left and we could line up and wear them out and put our points up in the second half" said Head Coach Eric Wagoner. The Bobcats came out with 14 straight runs setting the tempo for the rest of the game. Junior kicker Dayne Koontz put Frostburg on the board knocking a 26-yard field goal through the uprights. The Bobcats defense followed that up with a three and out. WVSU took a 7-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter started with the Bobcats continuing to run the ball setting up another made field goal from Koontz. Another three and out from the defense continued the momentum. Sophomore Graham Walker connected with senior Will Hall on a 26 yard catch and run to extend the drive. The next play redshirt freshman Sean Aaron scored on a 13-yard run through the middle of the defense for the 12-7 Bobcat lead.  Koontz secured the win for the Bobcats on his third made field goal of the game splitting the uprights from 35 yards out. The final score of the game was 18-7 Frostburg.

Senior Josh Maxwell crossed the century mark for the second straight game with 103 yards on the day. FSU had eight different players pull in catches through the day with Walker going 11-14.  The FSU defense was led by the junior Robert Horsey with 11 tackles and half a sack. Senior Luke Freeman had his first two sacks of the season to go along with seven tackles. Sophomore Akyian Loney's three pass breakups came up huge throughout the win.

The Bobcats move to 2-0 on the season with the Yellow Jackets going to 1-1. Frostburg goes on the road for their first road game when they play Charleston at 12 PM on September 17th. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
