FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State Volleyball team opened the season at the Vulcan Invitational facing off against Cal U. The Bobcats start the season with a 3-1(24-26, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22) win over the Vulcans.
The first point of the FSU season was recorded on a kill by sophomore AJ Thompson. From that point on the Bobcats took a slight edge through the early parts of the first set. Frostburg took a 10-4 lead on a Vulcans error. Cal would close the gap to 10-9 after a five-point run. Freshman Joie Allen would make the Bobcat lead 20-16 on a kill. Cal would come back to even things at 24-24 before finishing off the set with two straight points. Vulcan took the closely contested first set 26-24.
Frostburg and Cal exchanged points in the second set until the Bobcats were able to put three points together to make the score 8-5. The Vulcans would tie the set at 20-20. FSU would separate from Cal after two kills by junior McKaily Thomson-Moran. The Bobcats would tie the match by taking set two 25-21.
Frostburg broke out in the third set. Junior Beverly Braun started things off with a kill. Thompson would get her first kill of the set pushing the Bobcat lead to 14-6. A Vulcan comeback tied things up at 15 after a 9-1 run. Out of a timeout Braun hit a nice ball down the line and then a service ace for two straight Bobcat points. Thomson-Moran crushed a quick set over the middle of the net to make the score 18-16. The Bobcats took the set after a nice rally from both teams when a Cal spike went wide. FSU took a 2-1 after winning set three 25-21.
Early in the fourth set junior Hayley Delor got a kill on a quick ball over the net to make the score 4-3 FSU. After a good service run from the Vulcans the Bobcats got back on track after a big block from Allen making the score 10-6 FSU. Four straight errors from Cal pushed the Frostburg lead to 17-7. Sophomore Madison Reed would get the Bobcats to game point on a kill making the score 24-18. After a late Vulcan push Braun hit a change of pace ball overtop the block for the Bobcat win.
The Bobcats were led by Braun with 19 kills, Delor with 37 assist and 21 digs from sophomore Fiona Gonzalez Medina.
The Bobcats will return to the court tomorrow August 27 facing off against Bloomsburg at 11 AM and Lake Erie later that day at 2 PM. For more updates please visit frostburgsports.com.
