SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio- The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team took on No. 1 seeded Notre Dame (Ohio) in the MEC Championship, suffering a close loss for the second straight year, 17-15.
In the first quarter, the Bobcats would strike first with a goal from sophomore Anna Kearney, as the Falcons responded two straight goals. Freshman Julia Badolato tied the game back up, but once again NDC re-took the lead. FSU fired back with two quick goals from Kearney and freshman Kerri Hayes, with Hayes then adding another goal for a 5-3 Bobcat lead. The teams traded goals in a late flurry, with Notre Dame scoring once with a minute and a half left and again with just 11 seconds on the clock, as junior Lilly Stephens scored in between with just under a minute left to go into the second with Frostburg in the lead 6-5.
In the second quarter, it would be all Falcons, as they scored six unanswered, with the defense holding the Bobcats to only three shots, taking a strong 11-6 lead into the half.
Coming out of halftime, both defenses were resolute, with neither team scoring until just under five minutes left in the quarter, as it was NDC to score twice to grow the lead to seven. Hayes and graduate Stephanie King were able to salvage a couple goals in the final three minutes to go into the fourth down 13-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Falcons would get the first score of the quarter once more, as Frostburg answered through two goals Stephens to get within four. Notre Dame continued to keep FSU at bay with another two goals, leaving the Bobcats down 16-10 with just eight minutes left. Frostburg attempted a late flurry, with Stephens and Kearney scoring 30 seconds apart before NDC got one goal back. Hayes, freshman Megan Keller and King all scored in the final five minutes to get within two, but the Falcons won the final draw control and were able to see the game out, becoming back-to-back MEC Champions with the 17-15 win.
Hayes led the offense with four goals and an assist, with Stephens also scoring four and graduate Lindsay Kohlmann dishing out three assists. Freshman Krissy Milburn had game-highs with four caused turnovers and five groundballs in the defensive effort.
The team set new single-season program records for goals scored with 259 and draw controls with 262. while having the second-most points in school history with 356.
With the loss, Frostburg ends their season at 10-7, the first time the program has had back-to-back winning seasons since 2000-01, while the Falcons are 10-7 on the year.
