FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg State Baseball team split a Saturday twinbill against Concord at Bob Wells Field, by the scores of 7-5 and 7-2.
In game one, Frostburg would trail early, as Concord pushed two runs across in the top of the first to get an early lead. The Bobcats would respond in the bottom half of the inning with senior Bryce Jackson working a walk, then with two outs, junior Trevor Jones would launch a ball over the left field fence for a two-run shot to even the game up at 2-2. Concord would push three more across in the top of the second to take a comfortable 5-2 lead.
Jackson would begin his dominant day in the third as he blasted a line-drive homer out to right to reduce the deficit to 5-3. The Mountain Lions would push two more across in the fifth to stretch their lead to 7-3. The Bobcats would strike in the sixth, as junior Jack Maruskin would start with a single and then senior Jack Lawrence doubled to the fence to put two runners on the bases. Senior Nick Benitez would drive in Maruskin with an RBI groundout and then sophomore Justin Jimenez threw in a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 7-5, but weren't able to make any seventh-inning magic, dropping the first game.
Junior Max Proctor would take the loss as he went 3.1 innings giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits. Sophomore Jarek Bacon had another tremendous relief appearance, as he threw two innings of shutout baseball for his fifth and sixth straight shutout relief appearances.Â
In game two, Jackson and junior Will Grove would carry the load for the Bobcats in a comfortable win. Jackson hit his second and third homers of the day in the third and sixth to drive in five runs, while Grove went six innings of no-hit pitching before giving up his first hit in the top of the seventh. Grove improves to an impressive 5-0 on the year, as he finished his complete-game bid giving up 2 runs on just three hits.Â
Jackson led the offensive performance, as he went 3-4 with two home runs, five RBI, and two runs scored. With the three home runs, he moves his total on the season to 12, as he also moved into the all-time top-five in career leaders at FSU. Jones contributed two hits and Lawrence and freshman Danny Estrada would each drive in a run.Â
With the split, Frostburg moves their record to 18-5 and Concord goes to 17-8-1. The Bobcats will be right back in action tomorrow, April 2, as they host Glenville State in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. For more information on Frostburg Athletics, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
