Softball Splits Pair of Extra Inning Contests with Barton

WILSON, N.C.- The Frostburg State Softball team took on Barton in a road Saturday doubleheader, splitting the games 5-2 and 2-1, with both contests going into extra innings.

In game one, sophomore Sydney Theobald toed the slab for FSU, as both teams had 1-2-3 first innings. Barton struck first, using a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a sac fly to take a 1-0 lead, though Theobald limited the damage by earning a key strikeout with a runner on third.

After a scoreless third, freshman Jayla Hill got her monster day started with a solo homer to center field in the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1. The Bobcats threatened again in the fifth, getting bases loaded with no outs, but two flyouts either side of a strikeout ended the threat without a score.

Next, it was the Bulldogs to threaten in the fifth, as they got a runner on third with one out, but Theobald again worked out of the jam, getting a strikeout and groundout to end the inning. In the next inning, Barton thought they'd have the lead after a two-out single with a runner on second coming home, but sophomore Sierra Sanderson fired a bullet from center field into home plate to keep the game level.

Sanderson came up big again in the top of the seventh, as her RBI single plated Theobald from second to give FSU a late 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs weren't finished, however, as they turned a lead-off double into the tying run after a wild pitch and a single, getting a runner in scoring position with no outs and a chance to win the game. Theobald had other ideas, as she got three hard-earned outs to take the game to extras at 2-2.

In the top of the eighth, with a runner placed on second base at the start of extra innings, freshman Samara Funk stepped up and put the ball in play on an attempted bunt, but it was thrown to third to try and take out the lead runner and got away, scoring the run for a 3-2 FSU lead. The next batter up was Hill, who clobbered the first pitch she saw out to right field to score another two runs and put Frostburg ahead 5-2.

Theobald kept her composure in her final inning of work, getting a pop-out, groundout, and line-out to end the game.

In the second game, pitching was the name of the game, with both offenses shut down for most of the contest. Barton threatened in the first inning, using back-to-back singles after an opening strikeout to get runners on base. A sacrifice bunt got the runners to second and third, but freshman starter Katie Chapple came up with a huge strikeout to end the threat. The Bulldogs threatened again in the second inning, this time starting out with a pair of singles and a pop-out moving the runners to second and third with just one out. Chapple got another pop-out before walking the next batter to load the bases, but another pop-out ended the threat once again.

Both teams were limited to just one hit each going into the sixth inning, where freshman Jayla Hill broke the deadlock with her second home run of the year to give FSU a 1-0 lead.

Barton did not go quietly, as they strung together four straight two-out hits to tie things at 1-1 with the bases loaded. On the next play, Chapple made a fine defensive snag, throwing the runner out at home to force the game to extra innings for the second straight game. This time, however, it would be the Bulldogs that took advantage, getting a double and a single on back-to-back at-bats to take the 2-1 victory in walk-off fashion.

With the split, Frostburg stands at 3-6 on the year, while Barton is now 10-2. FSU is back in action tomorrow, March 6 as they take on Virginia State in a double-header scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
