CARY, N.C. - The Frostburg State Baseball team lost their first game of the year at the hands of New Haven, 5-4 in their first game of a three-game weekend.
The Chargers only scored one earned run, a home run by the second hitter in the bottom of the first off of junior starter Jack Maruskin. Other than that home run, Maruskin was efficient, as he went four innings and struck out three New Haven batters, however some defensive lapses allowed the Chargers to build a 5-0 lead, with none of the runs being earned. Junior reliever Max Proctor was untouchable on the mound in relief, as he pitched five shutout innings, only giving up two hits and striking out five.
The Bobcats were quiet offensively until senior Josh Netterville came up in the fifith inning and lifted a line drive over the second baseman's head to bring in sophomore Adian Duda to put FSU on the board.Â
Frostburg got hot as they started the sixth inning with back-to-back singles by juniors Trevor Jones and Andrew Smith. Then, junior Ethan Kiple came up to the plate and sent a ball into the trees in left field for a three-run shot and cut the deficit to one at 5-4.
Throughout the rest of the game the Bobcats had plenty of opportunities to put more runs across, but New Haven's pitching came through and delivered big outs to pull off the 5-4 victory.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 7-1 and New Haven moves up to 3-2 in their early season. The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow, March 5 for a ranked doubleheader, as they will take on No. 24 Franklin Pierce and No. 22 West Chester starting at 11:00 A.M. and 6:30 P.M, respectively.
