Softball Win Streak Snapped at Seven in Split with Battlers

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team faced off against Alderson Broaddus on the road in a Monday afternoon doubleheader, where each team took home a win.

Game one started out with a scoreless first inning, then in the second sophomore Katie Ernst launched a home run into left field to give FSU a 1-0 lead. AB responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs to get in front.

Frostburg began to claw back in the third, as freshman Jamie Roberts hit a clutch two RBI single to get within 5-3, then fellow freshman Adriana Wimmer got an RBI single of her own to cut the deficit to one.

Both offenses went quiet over the next couple innings, with the Battlers tacking on one more run in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-4. The Bobcats would mount their comeback in the top of the sixth, as once again it was the freshmen teammates coming up with the big hits to regain the lead. Roberts laced a single to left to score senior Kennadie Batchelor, then Wimmer smoked a bases-clearing double that scored three runs and gave FSU an 8-6 lead.

AB wasn't done, however, as they got one run back in the sixth inning, paving the way for a dramatic bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back singles put the first two runners aboard, then a fielder's choice put runners at first and third with one out. On a smart play from sophomore pitcher Sydney Theobald, she fielded a grounder hit right at her and got the runner at third caught in a rundown, eventually getting the out and putting runners at second and third with two outs. After a walk to load the bases, Theobald got the final batter to chase on a high fastball and secure the narrow victory 8-7.

Roberts and Wimmer led the Bobcat offense by going a combined 4-for-7 with seven RBI, while Batchelor was a thief on the basepaths with three stolen bases.

FSU again started out game two with a bang, as freshman Jayla Hill powered her sixth homer of the year over the left field fence for an early lead. They added another run in the second on a bases-loaded walk by Batchelor to bring the score to 2-0.

The Battlers responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, but Frostburg took the lead back in the next half inning at with an RBI double from Wimmer. Once again, AB was able to tie things in the bottom of the inning off a sac fly, then scored three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead.

The Bobcats were able to get a run back in the sixth off an error, but it wouldn't be enough, as their seven-game win streak was snapped in the 7-4 loss.

With the split, Frostburg now sits at 10-7 on the year, while AB is now 9-15. FSU returns to the field tomorrow, March 29 as they continue their road trip at Notre Dame (Ohio), with a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com.
