Baseball Breaks Out Bats to Defeat Senators

FROSTBURG, Md.- The Frostburg Baseball team rolled by Davis & Elkins in a chilly Sunday afternoon doubleheader by scores of 13-5 and 19-1.
In game one, the Bobcats used extra-base hits and solid pitching to dominate affairs. The Senators got an early 2-0 first inning lead, but Frostburg responded in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI single by freshman Christian Shertzer to tie things up. The Bobcats batted around in the third inning, as they scored eight runs. Junior Trevor Jones had two hits in the inning and two RBI while the hits kept coming from junior Ethan Kiple, junior Jack Maruskin, sophomore Aidan Duda, Shertzer, and freshman Danny Estrada to take a 10-2 lead. D&E put a couple runs back on the board, but senior Bryce Jackson hit a moonshot to right in the fifth inning for his fifth home run of the year, then Estrada tacked on an RBI the hard way, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth to cap the scoring at 13-5.
On the mound, junior Max Proctor fanned 10 Senators on his way to his second win of the year, while senior Josh Colliflower and sophomore Jarek Bacon combined for three strikeouts to put the total of strikeouts to 13 for game one.
Maruskin led the offensive onslaught with three hits and three runs scored, as Jones, Jackson, and Shertzer each had two hits and combined for six RBI.
In game two, it was much of the same story, as FSU again scored early, batting around twice in the second inning and putting up 14 runs, including a three-run bomb from Estrada, a bases-clearing double by senior Nick Benitez, and a two-RBI double to the wall by senior Josh Netterville. Jackson would add his second homer of the day, as he smoked a ball over the scoreboard in right-center to extend the Bobcat lead to 15-0 after three innings. Senior Jack Lawrence would add to the fun with his third homer of the year to take the lead to 16-0, and the Bobcats would sound the siren one more time with junior Andrew Smith going yard to push the lead to a comfortable 18-0. Junior Hayden McLaughlin put up the last run of the day, getting an RBI on a fielder's choice to score Lawrence from third. The Senators avoided a shutout in the top of the seventh with a run, but Frostburg came out on top 19-1.
On the mound, Kiple was flawless, as he allowed only one hit in four innings of work, striking out four. Freshman Ben Wieman would come in as relief and pick up the win, while freshman Dean Wandell also came in and threw a perfect inning, adding a strikeout to the total of six.
Benitez led the offense as he went 3-5 with three RBI, as Estrada, Smith, Lawrence, and Netterville each recorded two hits and combined for a total of 10 RBI.
With the pair of victories, the Bobcats move to 13-3 on year and Davis & Elkins drops to 3-13. Frostburg will be back in action Saturday, March 26 in Charleston, WV as they take on the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 P.M.
