Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Goldey-Beacom

HOCKESSIN, De.- The Frostburg State Baseball team split a doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom Friday afternoon by scores of 5-4 and 8-2.
In game one, Frostburg got on the board first, as senior Jack Lawrence launched a double in the right field gap to bring home junior Ethan Kiple in the fourth inning. The Bobcats pushed two more across in the fifth when junior Jack Maruskin and sophomore AJ Campbell recorded singles and freshman Christian Shertzer strung a ball through the left side to score Maruskin from second base. Senior Josh Netterville laid down a perfectly executed safety squeeze to score Campbell from third to give the Bobcats a 3-0 advantage.
After a run in the sixth and three in the seventh, Goldey-Beacom took their first lead of the game, 4-3. Frostburg would respond in the next half inning, as freshman Danny Estrada would work a pinch-hit walk, move to second on a ground ball back to the pitcher of the bat of senior Bryce Jackson, and advance to third on a passed ball. Junior Trevor Jones would get a huge two-out single to score Estrada and even the score at 4-4.
FSU surrendered a run in the bottom of the eighth to give Goldey-Beacom a 5-4 lead going into the final inning, as the Bobcats were unable to push a run across in the top of the ninth and Goldey-Beacom secured game one.
Junior Max Proctor was solid on the mound and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but was tabbed with the loss as he went 6.1 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out two batters. Jones led the offense with a pair of hits and an RBI.
In game two, the Bobcat bats broke loose as they scored eight runs on nine hits. The offense was highlighted by Jones (2-4, HR, 2 RBI), junior Andrew Smith (2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI), and sophomore Justin Jimenez (2-3, HR, 2B). The three were responsible for six of the nine hits and six of the eight RBI.
The trio of freshman Hayden Ford, junior Will Grove, and sophomore Nick Trey quieted the bats of Goldey-Beacom, only allowing two runs on five hits combined. Ford started his second game of the year and was untouchable, going three innings of one-hit ball and striking out two. Grove came in as relief and struck out two and earned his third victory of the year on the bump (3-0). Trey pitched the final two outs and shut the door for the Bobcats in the 8-2 win.
With the split, Frostburg moves to 9-3 on the year and Goldey-Beacom is now 4-15. Frostburg will be back in action next Saturday, March 19 for their home opener against West Virginia Wesleyan at Bob Wells Field at 1:00 P.M. For more information on Bobcat Athletics, visit frostburgsports.com
