Men's Basketball Comes Up Short on Road against Senators

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell on the road in their penultimate regular season game 76-68 to Davis & Elkins.

FSU started the game on fire, with senior Sean Patterson getting the scoring started, followed by back-to-back-to-back threes from graduate Jihar Williams and junior Agyei Edwards, capped off by a jumper from graduate Canaan Bartley to take a 13-2 lead. The Senators worked their way back to 15-8, but a Williams jumper was followed by a bucket from sophomore Jaylon Johnson to go back up 19-10.

The teams traded threes, with Williams making his third in the opening ten minutes, as D&E clawed away at the Bobcat lead, eventually taking their own lead at 32-28. Junior Bo Schene stopped the run with a jumper, then junior Torrin Stephens capitalized on a Senator turnover to tie things at 32-32. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the half, with D&E taking a narrow 37-36 lead going into the half after a bucket with 13 seconds remaining.

The Senators came out strong in the second half, holding FSU scoreless for the first three and a half minutes to take a 43-36 lead, as Stephens scored the Bobcats' first points at the 16:30 mark. D&E took another seven-point lead before junior Micheal Tate Jr. nailed a triple and Edwards made a layup to get Frostburg back within two. The Senators went back up by six, but Tate Jr. was determined to keep FSU around, scoring seven straight points to keep the Bobcats within touching distance, allowing Edwards to convert an and-one to tie the score before Tate Jr. capped the run with a layup to take a 55-53 lead.

A Senator timeout allowed the home side to regroup and take a five-point lead, with the run ended by a Patterson layup. Each time D&E looked to pull away, Frostburg responded with timely baskets, with Schene, Williams, and Tate Jr. all making buckets, as the latter hit a three to keep FSU within 67-64 going into the final two minutes. The Senators scored the next three points to go up by six, with Edwards knocking in a pair of free throws to get back within four. Frostburg wasn't able to close the gap enough, however, as D&E made their free throws down the stretch, limiting FSU to one more basket from freshman Justin Roseme and walking away 76-68 winners.

Tate Jr. led the scoring effort with 17 points, with Williams and Edwards joining him in double figures, as Edwards also led the team with four assists. Schene had a fine defensive night with four steals, while Patterson grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

With the loss, Frostburg falls to 7-20 overall, while D&E improves to 7-20. The Bobcats wrap up the regular season on Saturday, February 26, as it will be senior day in Bobcat Arena against Fairmont State.
