FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team is set to host Wheeling on Tuesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
How They Got Here: The Bobcats come into the game as the North Division one seed, having clinched their third straight division title with three games left to play in the regular season. FSU is riding a six-game win streak and sports a record of 16-1-1, including a 14-1-1 MEC record, which is the best mark in the conference.
Wheeling finished the regular season with a record of 6-11-1, including a 6-9-1 record in conference. The Cardinals won their season finale against West Liberty to clinch their first-ever spot in the MEC tournament.
The Matchup: Frostburg holds the season advantage over the Cardinals, having won 5-0 at Bobcat Stadium, though WU was able to hold onto a 2-2 draw at Bishop Schmitt Field. The Bobcats also hold the all-time advantage with four wins to Wheeling's one since FSU joined the Mountain East in 2019.
The Players: FSU is led offensively by junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer, who is tied for fourth in the MEC with 11 goals this season, while also providing five assists for 27 total points. Aiding her in goalscoring is sophomore forward Mackenzie Alonso (seven goals, five assists), sophomore midfielder Carolyn DeSena (five goals, five assists), junior midfielder Lela Clark (five goals, four assists), and sophomore defender Cat Smith (five goals). The Bobcats also boast the top defense in the MEC, having allowed just 10 goals in 18 games for a 0.56 goals against average, with 12 clean sheets on the year, all best marks in the conference. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Bilger has graduate Abbey Dennis, sophomore Mei Homman, freshman Skylar Ehart, and Smith in front of her to protect the Frostburg goal.
Wheeling's offense is led by sophomore midfielder Mary DiFonzo's eight goals and seven assists for a total 23 points. Graduate forwards Braedynn Porter (eight goals, one assist) and Kenadee Burgoyne (seven goals, one assist) also provide some firepower for the Cardinals, as well as sophomore midfielder Talynn DeBartolo (five goals, three assists). Defensively, fifth-year Mikayla Yarwood is one of the top goalkeepers in the conference, having made 121 saves, good enough for second in the MEC, with 6.72 saves per game.
The Rest of the Field: Across the other matches of the MEC tournament, in the other North Division tie, No. 2 seed Fairmont State hosts No. 3 seed Notre Dame (Ohio). In the South Division, one seed West Virginia State will play fourth-seeded Davis & Elkins and two seed Concord hosts third-seeded Charleston (WV). The winner between Frostburg and Wheeling will play the winner of Concord vs Charleston, with the higher seeded team to host. The winner of the Fairmont-Notre Dame match-up will play the winner of West Virginia and Davis & Elkins, with the host again being the higher seed remaining.
