FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Field Hockey team took a thrilling homecoming nail biter against 4th-ranked Millersville in overtime, winning 2-1.
After a back-and-forth start, FSU shocked the Marauders six minutes in, as junior Emilie Bonhivert slapped a shot into the back of the cage for a 1-0 advantage. The Bobcat defense held firm throughout the first half, with senior goalkeeper Madison Manalansan making a string of saves in the rest of the first half to take the lead into halftime
Millersville controlled possession for the majority of the game, with the FSU defense able to do just enough to keep them off the board. Late in the third quarter, however, Ashlynn Lennon scored the Marauders only goal of the contest off a corner to even the game at 1-1 with just under a minute remaining in the period. Both sides had chances to find a winner in the fourth quarter, but defense was the story of the contest, taking the game into extra time.
Overtime belonged to FSU, with a quick transition up the field earning a corner. The ball found its way to freshman Paige Lietzel, took a shot that was saved but sophomore Macy Layfield sealed the game as she buried one in the cage to give Frostburg the upset by a score of 2-1.
MU had 20 shots to the Bobcats' 10, including an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal, but Frostburg's defense, led by Manalansan and junior Maddie Wallis, kept the Marauder's shots out of the back of the net in FSU's second win over a ranked opponent this season. The six wins are already the most for the Bobcats in a season since 2015.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 6-4 on the year and Millersville is unbeaten no longer, dropping to 7-1. The Bobcats will be back in action Monday, October 10 as they host an 11 A.M matchup against Maryville. For more information on Frostburg Athletics, visit
