Hofkamp, Layfield Lead Field Hockey to Win in Season Finale

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Frostburg State field hockey team capped off their season with a 4-1 win over Mercy on Sunday.

FSU went on the attack early, with junior Emilie Bonhivert putting a shot on goal just over two minutes into the game. The Bobcats also had back-to-back corners after the attempt, but weren't able to break through the Mercy defense. At just under the 10-minute mark, sophomore Femke Hofkamp would find the back of the cage on an assist from sophomore Macy Layfield for a 1-0 lead. The same connection struck again just under two minutes later, with Layfield again laying the ball on a plate for Hofkamp to double the lead going into the second.

Down two, Mercy would pick up the pressure on offense in the second period. Senior Madison Manalansan would come up big for FSU, picking up four saves in the first half of the quarter. Eventually, the Mavericks would break through, scoring to tighten up the game at 2-1. The conceded goal would spark Frostburg into action, forcing Mercy's goalkeeper into four saves in the last four minutes of the quarter, though couldn't find the two-goal lead heading to halftime.

The Bobcats retained their focus to start the third, as freshman Paige Leitzel would get the lead back to two on an assist from junior Ashlyn Cave. Just over a minute later, Frostburg would add another goal, as Hofkamp turned provider for Bonhivert for a 4-1 lead.

FSU held off the Mavericks in the fourth quarter, fending off five corners and two shots. Freshman Zoe Barnes would pick up the last two saves, as she played the last 20-minutes of action in goal. Manalansan finished the day with nine saves in goal.

With the win, the Bobcats wrap up the season with a record of 8-10, the most wins for the program since 2015, while Mercy moves to 5-6. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
