Trio of Goal Scorers Lead Women's Soccer to Win Over Charleston

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team hosted the Charleston (WV) Golden Eagles at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday evening, earning an important 3-0 victory.

The early minutes of the match featured both teams fighting to set the tone and trading possessions. The Bobcats took the first lead of the evening just 16 minutes into the match as, junior Toni Fiocco-Mizer gained possession in the midfield and played a brilliant through ball to sophomore Carolyn DeSena, who arrowed the ball into the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead.

FSU looked to add to their lead 10 minutes later, as Fiocco-Mizer once again led the attack, drawing a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick midway through the first half. Junior Lela Clark would step up to take the penalty kick, successfully converting into the right side of the goal to give Frostburg a 2-0 lead. The lead would stay in the Bobcats' favor for the remainder of the first half, with their 2-0 score staying firm into halftime. FSU outshot the Golden Eagles 8-4 in the first half, with the back line of graduate Abbey Dennis, sophomore Cat Smith, and freshman Skylar Ehart holding UC's leading scorer Sydney Cavender in check.

Charleston came out with renewed energy in the second half, as they launched attack after attack at junior Ashley Bilger's goal, but weren't able to create many clear-cut chances, and the shots they did manage to take went well wide of the mark. Frostburg outlasted the Golden Eagle pressure and were rewarded in the 64th minute, as sophomore Mackenzie Alonso dribbled down the left wing, playing a ball that would deflect off of a Charleston defender and fall to the feet of freshman Carly Gillette, who quickly took her chance and fired low into the center of the goal to give the Bobcats a commanding 3-0 lead.

Bilger would do her job in goal to deny the Golden Eagles a consolation goal in the match, saving each of UC's two shots on target. The Bobcats fired off a total of 12 shots, with seven of those being on frame, as Charleston had 11 efforts, but just the pair on goal.

Depending on results around the conference on Sunday, the women could clinch the MEC North division title with a pair of games left to play. Additionally, a win in either of the team's final two matches of the year would also secure the North title.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 14-1-1 on the year, while the Golden Eagles fall to 9-7. Make sure to watch the Bobcats at Bobcat Stadium on Wednesday, October 26 as they host West Virginia State in a battle of the North and South division leaders for a 5 PM kickoff.
