Field Hockey Narrowly Falls to Lindenwood on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State Field Hockey team dropped a highly-contested home game against Lindenwood on Saturday morning by a score of 1-0.

The Bobcats honored their six seniors before the game, with celebrations for Emily Hughes, Kaleigh Cordrey, Rachael Rallo, Madison Hackett, Morgan Mathews, and Madison Manalansan.
After a slow start for both teams, Lindenwood got the first opportunity to break the tie, but was turned away on a kick save by Manalansan. Frostburg would switch fields quickly, as freshman Paige Leitzel was denied by the Lions keeper, but the save landed on the stick of sophomore Macy Layfield and she fired a bullet just wide of the goal to keep the game scoreless after a quarter.
The second quarter belonged to FSU as they racked up six penalty corners and three shots, but were unable to get one by the Lions' keeper. Layfield's shot was the most notable as she hit a stinger that was brilliantly saved to keep the score even at 0-0 going into the half.
The third quarter started with a chance by the Lions but again Manalansan came through with a save. Lindenwood's defense stiffened up in the quarter, as FSU was unable to get off any shots and it still was scoreless going into the fourth.
Leitzel started the fourth quarter with a pair of shots but both scooted wide. The Lions finally broke the tie as a shot was fired at Manalansan and she kicked it right at Mia Simpson, who fired the ricochet into the back of the goal to take the lead 1-0. The Bobcats had one last shot to even up the score with three minutes left as junior Emilie Bonhivert stormed down the sideline and launched a heater at the goal, but it was kicked away, and the Bobcats fell 1-0.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 5-4 and Lindenwood improves to 5-3. The Bobcats will be back in action Saturday, October 8 against Millersville at 5:00 P.M. For more information on Frostburg athletics, visit www.frostburgsports.com.
