CHARLESTON, W. Va.- The Frostburg State women's basketball team traveled to Charleston on Wednesday evening, where the Bobcats fell 74-60.
In the first quarter, the Golden Eagles started off quickly with a 7-0 lead that was halted by a three-pointer from sophomore Niya Moore. UCWV went on another run to push the lead to 18-5 that was again stopped by a bucket from Moore. Charleston would keep the offense going, leading 27-13 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, redshirt sophomore Kyrsten Joseph hit a pair of threes to get Frostburg's offense going., followed up with another triple from senior Morgan Dombroski to cut the deficit to 32-22. UCWV responded with five straight points, and despite sophomore Samiya Esema scoring three points toward the end of the half, FSU trailed 25-39.
In the third quarter, Frostburg came out sharp, scoring the first four baskets from junior Arianna Briggs-Hall, Moore, and senior Shelby Funchess to slice the Golden Eagle lead to just six at 39-33. After a Charleston bucket, Joseph hit another three to get FSU within five, but UCWV responded with five straight points. Sophomore Brenae Ford would knock down back-to-back shots and junior Maggie Sharp hit a triple to keep Frostburg within touching distance, but the Bobcats would trail 56-45 going into the fourth.
In the fourth, FSU again scored the first points of the quarter with free throws from senior Morgan Dombroski and a layup from Ford to get back within seven. The Golden Eagles, however, would keep the Bobcat offense at bay enough to keep a double-digit lead for most of the quarter, as the closest Frostburg got was back-to-back baskets from Funchess and Sharp with the deficit at nine points. Charleston finished the evening with the win 74-60.
Funchess was the Bobcats leading scorer with 12 points, followed by Ford with 10 points and a game-high four assists.
With the loss, FSU falls to 3-15 and the Golden Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season. Frostburg will be back in action at home against West Virginia State on Saturday, January 29 at 2 PM. For more information and updates, visit
