Men's Basketball Battles in Hard-Fought Loss to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team lost a tough battle at Charleston 88-79 on the road Wednesday evening.

The game started with both teams having looks at the basket, as graduate Canaan Bartley came away with a steal and the first points of the game. The sides traded the lead until graduate Jihar Williams hit two three-pointers, with the second triple leading to a 17-14 Bobcat lead. The halfway point of the half saw the game tied and both teams looking for a swing of momentum, of which the Golden Eagles took their opportunity and got out to a 29-23 lead.

Bartley brought the Charleston run to an end with a three on an assist from junior Agyei Edwards, who then made a layup to get within four. Junior Micheal Tate then added some offense, scoring four points in less than a minute as he, Edwards, and Bartley carried much of the first half scoring. Junior Bo Schene knocked down a jumper and Edwards knocked down a pair of free throws at the end of the half to take the teams into the half with the Golden Eagles up 45-42.

Frostburg came out from the half ready to play scoring six straight points and taking the lead, with Bartley scoring a layup and Tate Jr. making back-to-back buckets. UCWV responded with a 7-0 run and wouldn't trail from that point on. Edwards hit a three at the 16:36 mark to stop the run and make the score 52-50. Charleston again went on a run to stretch the lead to 10, which again was stopped with an Edwards triple. FSU slowly chipped at the lead, using baskets from sophomore Jaylon Johnson, senior Sean Patterson, and Bartley, who also added a free throw to get within two at 62-60. Tate Jr. later hit a couple of shots to keep the Bobcats within touching distance at the two-minute mark. FSU got a late three from Edwards, but those would be the last Frostburg points, as Charleston came away with the 88-79 win.

The Bobcats were led by the 21 points, seven rebounds, a block and two steals from Bartley, while Edwards added another 20 points and had a team-high three assists.

The loss moves the Frostburg record to 6-13 on the season, while UCWV now stands at 14-3. FSU will return home to face West Virginia State on Saturday January 29 at 4:00 PM. For information and updates stay tuned at frostburgsports.com
