Eric Wagoner Announced as Head Football Coach

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State University Director of Athletics Troy Dell has announced that Eric Wagoner will be the next head football coach at FSU. Wagoner will be the 14th head coach in program history and the second since the Bobcats joined NCAA Division II.

"I am extremely excited and humbled to be the next head football coach at Frostburg State University," said Wagoner. "Frostburg State University is a top academic and athletic institution, and the football program has a long and rich history. I look forward to upholding and continuing this legacy and cannot wait to get to work."

"I'm very pleased to have Eric Wagoner assume the head coaching responsibilities. He's well respected by our student-athletes and knows the keys to our success here at Frostburg State. I look forward to the 'mark of success' Eric will help us achieve in the upcoming years."- Frostburg State University President Ronald Nowaczyk

Wagoner brings 15 years of coaching experience to Frostburg, including spending the previous two seasons as the team's defensive coordinator. Over that span FSU, has a record of 13-2 overall and won a share of the MEC conference title this past season. The defense only gave up 16.36 points per game in 2021, good enough for 16th in all of Division II. The defensive group also led the country in total sacks (53), sacks per game (4.8), tackles for loss per game (11) and were second in total TFLs (121). Under his direction, 11 defensive players have earned All-MEC honors, including back-to-back defensive players of the year in Zach Strand (2021 Spring) and Carl Igweh (2021 Fall).

Before coming to Frostburg, Wagoner was a part of NAIA affiliate University of Saint Francis staff for nearly 13 years. He held various positions, including defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and assistant coach in his time with the Cougars. During that span, he helped Saint Francis to two NAIA National Championships and ten playoff appearances. In 2016, he was named the Football Scoop NAIA Coordinator of the Year

Wagoner received both his bachelor's and master's degree in business administration from Saint Francis. As a player for the Cougars, Wagoner went 51-4 with four conference championships and made three national championship appearances.

Frostburg State will hold a press conference at a later date to introduce Wagoner. Information on the time and date of the press conference will be posted at frostburgsports.com in the near future.
