Bobcats Earn Road Split at Fairmont State

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Frostburg State baseball wrapped up its weekend series with Fairmont State by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday. The Bobcats dropped game one 7-2 before claiming game two by a score of 7-3.

Fairmont got off to a good start in game one, plating four runs across the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. Frostburg would try and work their way back in the fifth, as junior Bryce Jackson drove home first-year Justin Jimenez on a single to right field to make it a 4-1 game.

Fairmont would answer right back. PJ Lanham cracked a two-run homer to left in the fifth to increase the Falcon lead to 6-1. Lanham would add another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.

Jackson would notch his second RBI single of the game in the seventh inning, but the Bobcats were held in check to end the inning, falling by a final of 7-2.

In game two, both teams got off to good starts at the plate, but the Bobcats were the only ones able to maintain it throughout the game. Frostburg got on the board in the top of the first, as junior Jack Maruskin scored after senior Ryan Roell hit into a double play to make it 1-0 FSU.

Frostburg would add another in the second, as sophomore Hayden McLaughlin singled home sophomore Jack Lawrence to increase the lead to 2-0. Fairmont would put up a crooked number in the bottom half, scoring all three of their runs. The first two came after Alex Banko reached on an error by first-year starting pitcher Nick Trey that allowed two runs to score to tie the game. Justin Brown was the next batter, and he would give Fairmont a 3-2 lead after singling to left field.

Frostburg State would knot things back up in the fourth, as Lawrence hit his first home run as a Bobcat over the right field fence to even the score at 3-3.

In the fifth, the Bobcats would regain the lead. After a wild pitch moved two runners into scoring position, Jackson would lace a single into left field, scoring first-year Danny Berckman to make it a 4-3 game. Later in the inning, a wild pitch would allow Maruskin to score from third with an insurance run to give Frostburg a 5-3 lead.

Two more Bobcats crossed the plate in the sixth. The first came on a leadoff home run from senior Mitch Fyffe to make it a 6-3 game. Later in the inning, Lawrence would score on a sacrifice fly by Berckman to make it a 7-3 Frostburg advantage.

This wraps up Frostburg's 2021 season, as they finish with a record of 14-25 overall. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
