Bobcats Sweep First MEC Road Series

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Frostburg State softball team added two more wins after their double-header against the Wheeling Cardinals this weekend, with a score of 12-2 in the first game and 4-1 in the second. This brought the Bobcats to 6-3 and Wheeling to 3-13 on the season.

The Bobcats started out strong with first-year Katie Ernst doubling to left field early in the first inning. Sophomore Brianna Powell batted a single but was able to make it home after an error, taking Ernst with her, making the score 2-0 to go into the second.

FSU continued to keep the Cardinals off the board, with first-year Sydney Theobald pitching three outs to the first three batters in the bottom of the third.

Frostburg captured their third run during the fourth inning when Theobald doubled to right field, sending first-year Ellie Buckheit to home plate.

After giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats were quick to answer early in the fifth, when senior Sam Carver doubled to right field to score senior Kat Treff from second. FSU did not stop there, with Ernst doubling to the right field, allowing first-year Sierra Sanderson to run home, making the score 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Only allowing one run to the Cardinals, the Bobcats captured seven runs in the top of the sixth from Ernst, Powell, seniors Aliyah Ramey and Taylor McCarty, juniors Kennadie Batchelor and and Shawna Leonard, and sophomore Ava Gnibus.

Theobald allowed just four hits the first game, with one strikeout and eight ground outs. This brought the final score for the first game to 12-2.

The Bobcats struggled to keep the momentum going to start the second game, allowing one run in the first for a 1-0 start for the Cardinals. Answering quick in the second inning, FSU scored a run, as Batchelor after Gnibus singled to center field.

FSU added two more runs in the top of the fourth to end the scoring for the second game. Treff singled, as Theobald advanced to second and made it home after a fielding error by Natalie Stoner in center field. Treff took the opportunity to make it to home after Carver hit a single, making the final score 4-1 for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats return to action on Monday, March 29 for a doubleheader at home against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers. Game one is set to begin at 2:00pm. For more information go to www.frostburgsports.com.
