FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State softball team will be holding their Kick Off Banquet on March 2 from 6:00-7:30 pm. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the event will be held virtually this year. Head Coach Bill Vasko offers some words of welcome ahead of the event.
"We are planning a dinner with our team, a silent auction, a keynote speaker, and a few other special surprises! The speaker for this year's event will be Sonja Hughes, who was a part of the very first varsity softball team at Frostburg.
Even though the event will be virtual, this will be an exciting way to honor both members of past teams as well as the current team. We hope that fans, friends and family will join us to kick off the season in grand fashion!
In addition to the event itself, our silent auction will start on Friday February 26 and end on Friday March 5. This will give everyone an opportunity to view and bid on the prize packages we have put together. All proceeds from the silent auction will support the softball program directly.
We hope to make this banquet an annual event with an in-person dinner in the future. It will be a terrific opportunity to get together yearly to enjoy the company of our fellow Bobcat fans, friends, and family while honoring the players, both past and present. It is also a way for us to not only generate excitement for the start of our season, but also a time to build our connection with our loyal alumni and supporters. We look forward to seeing you all! Keynote Speaker: Sonia Hughes '96
Sonja (Peterson) Hughes is a Program Manager for the Department of Defense – National Security Agency. She is a DoD Certified Acquisition Professional and has 24 years of Government experience. Sonja is a 1996 graduate of Frostburg State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. She was a member and Team Captain of the Inaugural 1996 Frostburg State Softball team, earning Most Valuable Player honors. Sonja began her student/athlete career playing softball at Division I Providence College, and later Division III softball at the Catholic University of America, prior to attending and finding her home at Frostburg. She coached youth and high school softball for many years and continues to follow the game closely. She has also stayed connected to Frostburg, serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors (AABOD) from 2014-2017. Sonja currently resides in Greenbelt, MD with her husband Greg Hughes (FSU '99) and 17-year-old son RJ.
