Bobcats Hold Off West Virginia State at Home

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team defeated the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets Wednesday evening in Bobcat Arena with a final score 77-71. Senior Jihar Williams led Frostburg with 20 points and three rebounds while junior Agyei Edwards recorded 15 points with seven rebounds.
 
The win moves the Bobcats to 3-5 on the season while the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-2.
 
After the Yellow Jackets scored the first basket of the game, the Bobcats went on a 20-4 run to open the first half with a 20-6 lead. Frostburg then went on a 13-5 scoring run to increase their lead to 30-14. With 7:44 left in the half, two layups from sophomore Jaylon Johnson and a three-pointer from junior Bo Schene sparked a 13-0 scoring run that gave the Bobcats a comfortable 46-21 lead at 4:09. The Yellow Jackets closed the half with a 9-0 run, keeping the Frostburg lead 46-30 going into halftime.
 
Williams nailed a three-pointer to keep the FSU lead 51-36. West Virginia State began to slowly chip away at the lead before a 20-4 scoring run put the Yellow Jackets on top by one 56-55 at the seven-minute mark. Frostburg re-took the lead 58-56 after a three-pointer from Edwards. A jumper from Edwards gave the Bobcats the lead again 60-58.
 
After two successful free throws from West Virginia State tied the game 62-62, Johnson made layups on back-to-back possessions to regain the lead 66-64. A three-pointer from Williams, along with another layup from Johnson, gave Frostburg a four-point advantage 71-67 with 2:25 to play.
 
Johnson made another layup to keep the Bobcat lead at 73-69 with 1:29 left in the game. Two successful free throws from the Yellow Jackets brought them to within two points 73-71 with 1:20 left. The Bobcats closed the game out with four points from senior Sean Patterson to seal the win 77-71.
 
Patterson ended the night with 12 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Johnson recorded 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Junior Jamil Jones contributed five points and four rebounds for the Bobcats.
