Frostburg Hold Off Alderson Broaddus In Bobcat Arena

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's basketball team won a hard-fought contest Monday evening to defeat the Alderson Broaddus Battlers 87-86. Graduate Canaan Bartley led the Bobcats with 38 points and six rebounds.
 
The win moves Frostburg to 4-9 while the Battlers drop to 6-7.
 
The Bobcats jumped out with a 15-4 lead after an 11-point scoring run with 13 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Jaylon Johnson successfully hit a jumper along with a three-pointer on the following possession to increase the FSU lead 22-14. Bartley followed that up with a jumper to take a ten-point lead 24-14 with eight minutes left in the half.
 
Another seven-point scoring run which featured a layup from Bartley and junior Agyei Edwards increased the Bobcat lead to 14 at 31-17 at the 5:56 mark. A three pointer from senior Jihar Williams followed by a jump shot from Johnson were the last points of the half for Frostburg taking a 44-35 lead into half.
 
Bartley scored the first bucket of the second half for the Bobcats with a jumper making it 46-38. The Battlers gain momentum coming out of halftime taking the lead 53-50 at 16:03. Senior Sean Patterson answered with a three-pointer to tie it at 53-53. Williams nailed a three-pointer at 12:12 tying the score at 62-62.
 
Junior Juston Bailey started a 11-3 scoring run with a layup which included two layups from Edwards as well as a jumper and three-pointer from Bartley to take a 78-75 lead with 4:39 left in the game. Junior Jamil Jones nailed a jumper at 3:24 to increase the FSU lead to four at 80-76. With five seconds remaining, Edwards was sent to the line and successfully converted both free throws to take another four-point lead. The Battlers hit a three-pointer as the time expired which wouldn't be enough as the Bobcats held on to earn the win 87-86.
 
Edwards ended the night with 14 points and three rebounds while Johnson recorded 13 points with two rebound and one assist. Williams contributed nine points in the game for FSU.
