FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's volleyball team dropped the home opener against West Liberty. The Bobcats fell in three-sets by scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-22. This drops FSU to 0-2 and West Liberty to 3-1 on the season.
Frostburg hit .016 against the Hilltoppers with 26 kills. First-year Laken Michael lead the scoring with 7 kills on the night while sophomore Edwyna Lainez earned 23 assists. First-year Jenna Gossard recorded 12 digs and one ace.
The Bobcats went on a four-point scoring run early in the first set to bring the score to 10-7. Later in the set, FSU gave up seven points in a row to the Hilltoppers bringing the score to 21-12. A kill by Michael gave the Bobcats their last point of the set.
Lainez was eager to start the set, getting the first score for FSU. West Liberty was quick to answer, getting the next five-points. Later in the set, first-year McKaily Thomson-Moran got the Bobcats their fifth point, bringing the scoring to 13-5. Junior Raven Pratt had a solo block against the Hilltoppers, getting the Bobcats their last point of the set ending with the score 25-9.
The Bobcats weren't going away without a fight. Thomson-Moran tied the set at 4-4 early in the third. FSU took a two-point lead half-way through the set 16-4. The teams went back-and-forth throughout the set, with the set being tied 20-20 late. Junior Haley Altemus got the last kill for the Bobcats until the Hilltoppers went on a two-point scoring run to finish the set 25-23.
