Thompson, Sterenberg Come Up Clutch in Volleyball's Five-Set Win

FROSTBURG, Md.- Frostburg State volleyball scored a huge victory over Notre Dame (Ohio) in a five-set thriller at Bobcat Arena on Tuesday night.
 
In the first set, NDC jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but FSU came back with four straight points to go up 6-5. The sides would trade points for the rest of the set, with neither team able to take a lead of more than three points. With the score tied at 24-24, the Falcons were able to take the final two points to win 26-24.
 
Frostburg started out faster in the second set, taking a 10-5 lead, with half of the points coming from sophomore Beverly Braun. The Bobcats pushed the lead to 18-10, eventually taking the set 25-17 on a kill from freshman AJ Thompson.
 
FSU took another quick lead in set three, rattling off seven straight points to take a 10-4 lead, among them three straight aces from junior McKenna Houser. NDC fought back with their own run, tying the set at 14-14. The teams traded three-point runs, with FSU then scoring six of the next seven points to take a commanding 23-18 lead before winning the set 25-21.
 
The Falcons would not go away easily, battling with Frostburg in the fourth set to a 13-12 lead, then scoring six of the next seven points to go up 19-13. Despite a Bobcat comeback to 23-20, two straight NDC points won the set 25-20 and took the match to a fifth set finale.
 
Starting out the deciding set, with the score at 5-4 in favor of FSU, the Bobcats took seven straight points, with five of them coming from Thompson, to take a 12-4 lead. Junior Jackie Sterenberg scored Frostburg's next three points to take the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.
 
Braun led the team in kills with 24 and tied for the team lead in digs with freshman Fiona Gonzalez Mediina, each getting 21. Thompson had 14 kills to go with a team-high five blocks and redshirt sophomore Hayley Delor set a new season-high with 55 assists.
 
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 9-18 overall, while NDC falls to 15-15. Frostburg returns to the court Thursday, November 11 as they travel to face Fairmont State in the final regular season match of the year, set to start at 7 p.m. For information and updates stay tuned at frosburgsports.com.
